GIOVANNI (JOHN) BATTISTA MASI With great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Titta surrounded by his family on Tuesday, December 3, 2013, at the age of 93 years. Family was everything to DAD and he was everything to his family. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten. In 2010 he was predeceased by his loving daughter Nina Caliguiri and twin great-grandsons Oli and Poly. He leaves to forever cherish his memory his devoted wife of 66 years, Assunta; his children Mary (Tom) Scerbo, Tony (Teresa), Raphael (Debbie) and his son-in-law Frank; his 14 grandchildren Sandy (Mark), Michael, Chris (Elena), Jennifer (Jeff), Tommy (Connie), Robbie (Rachelle), Dina (Peter), Gianni, Alex, Gabby, Sergio, Nikki, Kristina, and Gino and his 11 great-grandchildren: John, Caterina, Julia, Isabella, Nia, Selenna, Sabrina, Cali, Matteo, Kaleb and Francesco; brother-in-law Vittorio Borelli (Angela), sister-in-law Concetta Masi; numerous nieces and nephews; and extended family and friends in Canada and Italy. Dad was born September 25, 1920, in Amato, Catanzaro, Italy, and lived there until he came to Canada in 1951. Dad served in the Second World War and received medals of honour. John left Italy to come to Canada with the dream of providing his family with a better life and, with a lot of sacrifice and effort, he accomplished that. Over the years John worked for CNR, Royal Alex Hotel, Canada Bread and retired from Transcona - Springfield School Division after working there for 23 years. Dad's main priority was his family and he has instilled the value of family to all his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dad taught us and showed us that by working hard you can overcome barriers and achieve your goals. We all feel grateful to have had Nonno as an active participant in our lives, being there for all our special days and always encouraging us to do the right things. We are a close family as Nonno brought us all together for birthdays, holidays and many, many summers at the cottages in Gimli. Nonno took care of us, played with us and taught us many things. He was loving, caring and fun to be around. John was such a vibrant man and lived a very fulfilling and healthy life. In February 2010 (aged 89) he suffered a stroke and needed to be placed in a personal care home. The family wishes to thank the staff at Concordia Hospital and Deer Lodge Centre (T3) for their compassionate care. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, December 13, at 11:15 a.m. at Holy Rosary Parish Church, 510 River Avenue, with Fr. Sam Argenziano the Celebrant. Condolences begin at 10:00 a.m. with eulogy at 11:00 a.m. Entombment will follow at the Chapel of Eternal Memories Mausoleum, 1501 Waverley Street. Pallbearers will be his seven grandsons. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Heart and Stroke Foundation Manitoba, 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6 or CancerCare Manitoba, 1160 - 675 McDermot Avenue. Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9 While we will mourn your loss, you will be forever in our hearts. Caro pappa e nonno, Riposa in Pace.
