SERGEI L. SHERMAN 1938 - 2013 It is with sadness we announce the unexpected passing of Sergei, at home, on December 14, 2013 in his 75th year. Sergei leaves to mourn his loving wife Elizabeth (Pachkowski), daughters Louise, Thomasin, and Judith, granddaughters Katherine, Antonia, and Sophie, sons-in-law Calvin, Darren, Richard and Bruce; brothers-in-law Chuck (Eileen) and John (Lee), sister-in-law Adelene; and many nieces and nephews. Sergei was predeceased by his mother Sophie, father Peter, and sister Elizabeth. After teaching in a number of rural schools in Manitoba, Sergei spent 25 years as an administrator, guidance counsellor, and classroom teacher in Charleswood. An active member of his church community, he was a Knight of Columbus for 30 years. He held many offices in his local council, joined the Fourth Degree and was Faithful Navigator of Capt. Miles MacDonnell Assembly 0370. Sergei served as a volunteer for Winnipeg Police Service, Grace Hospital and was a member of the Board of Directors of Mood Disorders Association of Manitoba. Sergei was a devoted family man. He was as large in life as he was in stature. He was a caring, forgiving, and generous spiritual being who lived life for each day and counted life's many blessings. His faith was unshakeable, even in the face of challenge. He left lasting impressions on his students, his family and his community, and will remain forever in our hearts. A memorial service will be celebrated at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 4588 Roblin Blvd. on Friday, December 20, at 11:00 a.m., with Msgr. Maurice Comeault PH officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sergei's memory to Mood Disorders Association of Manitoba or the Society of Manitobans with Disabilities would be gratefully accepted. Condolences & Memories (9 entries)

  • Just stumbled onto this sad news today - Mr. Sherman was a teacher of mine (and Tammy was a classmate) in the late 1970's at Westdale. Mr. Sherman was not only a great teacher but had this uncanny knack (God-given gift) to connect with students by being interested in the interests we had - I love music and Mr. Sherman and I would have many conversations on how Wpg. born Burton Cummings recorded his solo albums - Mr Sherman was a blessing to all he came in contact with. May the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7). - Posted by: Peter Dakins (Former Student) on: Feb 27, 2014

  • My deepest condolences to you and your family in the loss of your father and grandfather. He was a very important part of FGSD/PTSD as are all of you. My prayers go out to you as you go through this holiday season and start the new year without him. - Posted by: Kristi Grunsten-Yonda (colleague of Louise, former teacher of Kate and Sophie)) on: Jan 01, 2014

  • Dear Louise, Calvin, Darren, Kate and Sophie I was very sad to hear about the passing of your father. During this time I hope that the wonderful accomplishments and life memories will bring your family peace. We will be praying for all of you. I remember when your Dad came to Kate's Grade 2 presentation. I enjoyed meeting and talking with him. Your Dad has left a lasting impression on everyone he met. • I would just like to extend my deepest condolences to the friends and family of Mr. Sherman. I count myself fortunate to have had Mr. Sherman as my home room teacher at Westdale Junior High in the late 1980's. He later taught both my younger brother and sister. He will be missed. I died as a mineral and became a plant, I died as plant and rose to animal, I died as animal and I was Man. Why should I fear? When was I less by dying? Yet once more I shall die as Man, to soar With angels blest; but even from angelhood I must pass on: all except God doth perish. When I have sacrificed my angel-soul, I shall become what no mind e'er conceived. Oh, let me not exist! for Non-existence Proclaims in organ tones, 'To Him we shall return.'
