MARY HORECHNY In memory of our dear sister Mary who passed away on October 1, 2013, predeceased by her husband Joe in 2004. Mary was born in Pobedim, Slovak Republic, on September 15, 1935. She was the second child of Alojzia and Sylvester Bielik. In 1937 at the age of two, she immigrated to Canada with her Mother, Father and two sisters. She was raised on the family farms in Rosewood and Arondale, Manitoba, along with six sisters and three brothers. She attended school at Rosewood, Arondale and Lorette Collegiate, graduating from Grade 12. Mary completed her teacher training at Normal School in Winnipeg. Her first teaching job was in Hazelridge where she met her future husband, Joe Horechny. Mary and Joe married in 1957 and lived with Joe's parents while Mary taught in Hazelridge. Her next teaching position took her to Arondale Elementary School where she taught grades one to eight. She and Joe lived in the teacherage attached to the school. After that Mary and Joe purchased a house on Betournay St. in Windsor Park and Mary taught at Frontenac School and later worked as an educational assistant in the St. Boniface/Louis Riel School Division. Mary and Joe raised three children in Windsor Park; Jacqueline, Shelley and Jason. They had five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mary was diagnosed with diabetes and partial kidney failure and had to receive dialysis three times a week. She sold her family home, moved into an apartment and later was paneled to live at Maples Personal Care Home and Vista Park Lodge. Mary lived a good and productive life. She was always a very positive person accepting what happened to her in stride. She was courageous in her battle with her illnesses. Mary, you will be missed at our Christmas table. Sadly missed, much loved and always in our hearts. Love, your brothers, sisters and all the family.
