CAROL DUNCAN (nee BIBERDORF) December 23, 1942 - December 20, 2013 The family of Carol Duncan of Winnipeg, Manitoba are saddened to announce her passing at Riverview Health Centre on December 20, 2013. Carol succumbed to cancer after a four year battle, in which she fought valiantly and with great determination. Carol will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by Barry, her beloved husband of 48 years; their children, Ian (Debbie) Duncan, Patrick (Jennifer) Duncan, and Kathy (Trevor) Duncan, and her eight grandchildren Ian Jr., Eric and Shae Duncan; Sydney and Callum Duncan; Sawyer, Ethan and Seth McMahon along with Christine Duncan and Vern McMahon. She is also survived by her sister Jeanette (Leo) Triechel, brother Ken (Sharon) Biberdorf, sister-in-law Edie Biberdorf, and nieces and nephews and their families, Paul, Jodie and Jonathan; Donald, Shannon and Darren; Rebecca and Sarah, and brother and sister-in-law Bruce and Linda Duncan, and long-time friend, Lyn Leray (Merry). Carol was predeceased by her parents, John and Margaret Biberdorf; brother John Biberdorf; Barry's parents, David and Gladys Duncan, and stepfather Casey Pearsall. Carol was born on December 23, 1942 in Winnipeg, MB. She grew up in St. James and, upon graduating from St. James Collegiate, entered into the School of Nursing at the Misericordia Hospital where she obtained her RN. She obtained her Public Health designation after attending the University of Manitoba. It was during her time at the university that she met the love of her life, a young, budding pharmacist by the name of Barry Duncan. After a short courtship they were married in 1965 and settled in Langenburg, SK where Barry owned and operated a pharmacy. It was during this time that Carol and Barry were blessed with three beautiful children, Ian, Patrick and Kathy, who were the center of their universe. Carol not only became a fulltime mother of three, she reinvented the word with her caring, timeless nurturing, and dedication to the role. Not only was she a wonderful mother, she was a homemaker of the highest order creating a home that was a delight for Barry to come home to. After 10 years in Saskatchewan, they moved back to Winnipeg followed by 18 years in Teulon, MB where their children received most of their education. Carol continued her role as a mom and homemaker, but she still found time to belong to many organizations in the community in support of her children. She balanced this by working in the pharmacy as the CFO. Carol and Barry sold the pharmacy in 1992 and in 1995 moved to Charleswood in Winnipeg where they have lived to this day. Wherever she resided Carol made many wonderful friends who have meant so much to her and she to them. During her years of illness it was a fulltime job for Barry to act as her secretary receiving and acknowledging all the many inquiries and get well wishes from friendships that she made over the years. Carol's great sense of humour, charming smile, and great talent to tell a story coloured by indiscriminate embellishments was enjoyed by all. Carol and Barry had some wonderful years of travel to many destinations in North America and Europe, and enjoyed immensely time spent with family at their condo in Cocoa Beach, FL. If Carol was in the top percentile in mother ratings, she was over the top when it came to grandmothers. Her eight little ones were the beneficiaries of her doting, loving ways. They all adored her and have vowed to follow her explicit directions on how to live out their lives after she is gone. She was known as Grandma to some and Garbine to others, a moniker that defies explanation. Carol's faith was very important to her and she was an active member of the Lutheran Church all her life. She was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church at the time of her passing. Barry would like to thank all their friends and neighbours who have been so generous and supportive over these trying years, blessings that will never be forgotten. During this journey through the health care system, we would like to thank The Gynie Oncology Team Clinic 3 at CancerCare specifically Doctors Dean, Lotocki, Popowich, and Altman along with Doctors Sharon Naugler, D. McTaggart for their excellent care. Special thank you to Brenda Adelman and Pastor Jennifer Marlor. Carol's final days were spent at Riverview Palliative Care where she received wonderful medical care from her primary care provider, Dr. Joanna Webb, who attended with compassion and professionalism. In lieu of flowers, a donation to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9 would be appreciated. A memorial service will be held at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 637 Buckingham Road on Friday, December 27 at 11:00 a.m. A private family interment will follow later. To quote Carol, "See you in the funny pages". Expressions of condolences may be sent condolences@nbardal.mb.ca. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

Carol was a warm and caring woman with a quick wit and marvelous sense of humour. I have the fondest childhood memories of Carol at family gatherings, often hosted by her and Barry. She always had an endearing smile and a twinkle in her eye. Carol embraced my wife, Lynne, and our children and made them feel part of our family. She was all you could ever hope an aunt to be!
