BERNARD STANLEY BERNACKI Peacefully on Christmas morning with family at his side, Bernie Bernacki passed away at the age of 72. He will be lovingly remembered by Evelyn, his wife and best friend of 46 years and his children: Jeff (Luella), Barry, and Tess (Rob) and his four grandchildren: Annika, Patrick, Joey and Benjamin. Dad was born to the late Mikolaj and Helena Bernacki on April 2, 1941 and was predeceased by his brothers Walter and Joe (Mary), and survived by his brother Bill (Christine) and sister Jeanne (Brian). Bernie attended Teacher's College and later obtained his undergraduate degree at the University of Manitoba. He started his professional life as a teacher then changed careers and spent many enjoyable years working at Canada Post until his retirement. A man of strong Catholic faith, Bernie was committed to teaching his children the importance of God's word and the benefits of an education, hard work, honesty and dedication. His greatest achievement in life was his family and he was very proud of his three children and his four grandchildren. Many years were spent coaching hockey, soccer and baseball and later cheering on his boys from the sidelines at Crusader football games. Great family memories were made on annual camping trips to most corners of North America and later in life on many treasured trips to Hawaii with Evelyn. The cottage at Hillside Beach provided many, many years of happiness. The family wishes to sincerely thank WHRA Home Care Coordinator June and Home care staff, Paramjit, Akiko, and Velma for their support over the past couple of years and WFPS and St. Boniface and Victoria Hospitals for the exemplary care they provided Bernie this past week. Funeral Mass will take place on Saturday, December 28 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Ignatius Church. Private interment to follow. The Coutu Family in care of arrangements: E.J. COUTU & CO. • My brother Bernie was always there in my life. I remember his smile, his pushing me in the carriage when I was about two. I remember him as my constant chatty companion on my family's journey from the different cities in Germany to Manitoba. We walked over two miles to the one room Finns School then went on to Riverton Collegiate where it was only one mile to the bus. The wind was always in our face and Bernie shielded me with his larger frame. I followed in his footsteps. My brother protected me from bullies on several occasions.. he loved to play baseball so I pitched and chased his wonderful fly balls into our neighbour's pasture. Bernie was also an active worker on our family farm and continued to help our father in seeding and harvest for all the years our father needed him. Bernie was a fun-loving, teasing son who always made our parents laugh with his stories. He made life-long friends with many people and he made sure he kept in touch. He worked to maintain relationships with everyone he loved and he achieved this in a straight-forward way. An athletic, energetic, talented man whose family was always first, my brother was my guide and my big brother. He was always my biggest supporter. I miss him. I was visiting my son in Europe and was ill at the time of his untimely death. There is a void in my life I cannot fill but I am so grateful for all his love and support. May he rest in peace. - Posted by: jeanne pauls (sister) on: Dec 30, 2013

  • I grew up going to school with Jeff, Tess and Barry. Some of my best memories of those years have Mr. Bernacki in them. Delivering the huge route of newspapers, Saturdays we would get help from Bernie. Loading up the car and following the kids to make the job a little easier. I remember the competition to find the leanest bacon at the store for breakfast that morning. cutting the dandelions out of the grass in the spring with a butter knife, our reward was getting the old car out and going for a cruise. I felt like one of the family for many years thanks to Mr. Bernacki. I will always remember the things you taught me. you helped me put some of the big rocks in my jar of life. - Posted by: Richard Bobrowski (Family Friend) on: Dec 27, 2013
