JOHN ROBERT (BOB) JEFFERSON Suddenly while on holidays in Chicago with his family, Bob Jefferson, aged 74 years of Selkirk, MB passed away on December 25, 2013. Bob leaves to mourn his sister Doreen Sisto, nephews Guy Sisto, Mark Sisto (Cori) and their children Dylan and Tyler, as well as cousin Ann Carol. He will be sadly missed by the Truthwaite and Boyce families as well as many extended families in the UK and dear lifelong friends. There will be heavy hearts left in the City of Selkirk as Bob embraced so many people by his unique and natural ability to engage anyone by offering pleasant and encouraging words or having a visit over coffee. He was predeceased by his father William Robert Jefferson and his mother Barbara (Neave) Jefferson, as well as numerous aunts and uncles. Bob lived his entire life in Selkirk, MB. He started his career in the Lord Selkirk School Division as a teacher where he taught at Lockport School, William S. Patterson, St. Andrews School, and Happy Thought School where he was vice-principal. From here, he became principal at Walter White School in Grand Marais for close to eight years, hence, he became known as "Bobby J from Grand Marais". Bob continued on as principal of Mapleton School until his retirement in 1993. In 1994, Bob and Doreen ventured "out of the box" and took a real estate course. They started a new career with Interlake Real Estate up until Bob decided it was time to go on his own. In 1997, Century 21 Jefferson and Associates was formed and is now complemented by eight agents, as well as their faithful and dedicated office manager, Rose Walsh. Bob always said, "What would we ever do without Rose". Bob was an active citizen in so many capacities in the City of Selkirk right up until his passing. He was passionate and loved everything about Selkirk. In fact, he held various positions as a Board member with many businesses. He contributed to, and supported, many sports, fundraisers, and charities. He participated in the Festival on the Red for a number of years. He was director of the Marine Museum where he would later become chairman of the Board. He was a Kinsmen, K40, and Rotarian where he was president for a one year term. He was a chartered member of Ducks Unlimited. He was also a Board member at the Selkirk Foundation. Although Bob contributed to a variety of charities, his last one would be the new Selkirk "Gaynor" Library. Throughout the years Bob managed some hockey teams. His love for hockey moved him to be a Gold sponsor for the Selkirk Steelers, as well he sponsored the Junior Bs Fisherman and the Selkirk Royals High School. Bob's love for education prompted him to set up a scholarship fund for students working toward becoming educators. Every year the entire proceeds from Century 21 Jefferson and Associates Golf Tournament went to the Selkirk Foundation. Bob was truly humbled when he was presented with the Citizen of the Year Award for Selkirk in 2001, only to be honoured a few years later with an Entrepreneur Award! Bob would again, receive the prestigious Community Service Award from W.R.E.B in 2002. Bob was generous almost to a fault because he found it very difficult to say "No" to any request for contributions that he felt would benefit and prosper the well-being of people and the community as a whole. He truly was a compassionate, non-judgemental, warm and fun-loving man. He was kind and respectful, and he was a good sport with a great sense of humour. A celebration of Bob's life will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in the Lord Selkirk Regional Comprehensive High School Gymnasium. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bob's memory to the Selkirk & District Community Foundation, 200 Eaton Ave., Selkirk, MB R1A 0W6. One final note to you while we say good-bye and Thank You... It was YOU Bob, who was "Super" and it, was YOU Bob who was "One in a Million"!!! Condolences & Memories (94 entries)

  • Bob was like family to us, I've known him my whole life; he came to several family gatherings of ours over the years and always made everyone smile. He was always asking me how I was doing in school, I'd say I'm doing great, and he'd say "Super, good for you!". I always enjoyed talking to him because he was always willing to listen and always had something funny to say. I had just seen him on Thanksgiving of 2013, when he had us over at his house. Bob, I will miss you so much, and I think of you every day... You were so kind and caring... Rest in peace, you will be truly missed. And to Doreen, my sincerest condolences and sympathy. - Posted by: Morgan Werschler (Family Friend) on: Feb 16, 2014

  • Bob was one of the few people who could light up a room - did so on our first occasion to meet. And continued to do so at all times of the day and night! It was a pleasure to have this wonderful guy in my life. My condolences to the entire extended family. - Posted by: Roger Burns (colleague) on: Jan 15, 2014

  • Bob left a benchmark legacy of caring and sharing in the community. He was an inspiration, not only as an educator and businessman, but for his passion in everything he did. Our last meeting was at the Steeler 40th Anniversay Reunion. Even though many years had passed, Bob made you feel like it was only yesterday. Truly saddened by Bob's passing. Our sincerest condolences to family and friends. - Posted by: Willy Cole (Friend (Regina, Sk.)) on: Jan 13, 2014

  • Dear Doreen...such a big loss...you and Bobby were so close... I had such a great visit with him when I was back to our high school reunion...it was at Club 17...and he was hosting...summer of 2012.... I told him how I remembered you and Diane Robertson babysitting Judy, George and me when we lived on Vaughan avenue across from the Boyds...I thought you were so "cool" because you wore "strides"! Also remember your dear mom and dad...always so faithful in attending the evening service at Knox. Well I do believe Dr. Dickey would preach...even if they were the only ones in attendance! The other favorite memories we talked of were the many dance recitals of my mom's...you were in the chorus line... That is my last memory of your brother...the two of us chuckling away about old times...he had same sunny outlook as you....what can I say?...just sending a big hug your way...Bonnie - Posted by: Bonnie McMillan (Sigurdson) (Selkirk friend from long ago) on: Jan 07, 2014

  • Bob and I started our teaching careers at the Lockport 4-room school. I was a bit envious of him for 2 things...his brand new (maroon) Pontiac and his Uni. degree. Our only resources were boxes of chalk, a board duster and a love of teaching the "greatest kids on the planet". After that I never saw Bobby again but we each would pass on our regards through my sister Edna (Wishnowski) who shared many chats and laughs with Bob, and Bro'-in-law Emil. Edna, Emil and I pass on our condolences to Bob's extended family, friends, neighbours and the Selkirk Community who knew and loved Bob. PS. We both agreed..."Happy Thought"...what a wonderful name for a school!! - Posted by: Emil Russin (Adelaide Australia) (teaching colleague) on: Jan 04, 2014

  • We are saddened to hear of the passing of Bobby J. Bob was a true gentleman and scholar. Selkirk and District will miss him and his endeavours. We still recall Bob dropping in on Saturdays when Vern was cutting the grass on Eveline-just in time for a cold one. Miss those days! Our condolences to Doreen and family. - Posted by: Vern & Judy Desmet, Qualicum Beach, BC (Friends) on: Jan 04, 2014

  • What a privilege to have known "uncle bobby-Jeff..." I can remember the feelings of joy I would have knowing he'd be at the table for dinner.... Just the sight of him when I'd walk into my aunt Pat and uncle Alan Bart's house gave me the feeling of being "home." Such kindness from another human being, his brand of gentleness and positivity is a great source of teaching - uncle bob was a living lesson in what wealth and currency mean.... And it's not money. His gift was generosity and selflessness, and he had a humility that I could only aspire to in my life. What a great inspiration he was to all the lives he has touched.... He will be missed and he will continue to teach in the many years to come via the great memory of his caring and truly conscious ways! - Posted by: Chantal kreviazuk (Uncle "by marriage") on: Jan 04, 2014

  • All of the previous comments describe Bob so truly. We also found Bob to be special as our agent for selling and purchasing homes. He always returned calls promptly and although we knew he was very busy it seemed that he had all the time in the world. He subsequently had a friendly-warm smile and engaged in a chat over the years as if we were friends. Selkirk has lost a great ambassador, friend and business man. Will miss you Bob. God speed. Doreen, families, friends, business associates, we know you have lost a special one and hope there is comfort in knowing how wonderfully he lived and all the ways he helped others - Posted by: Bob and Gina german (Business) on: Jan 04, 2014

  • I worked with Bob at Walter Whyte School as a teacher in the 80's. He always had a smile for everyone ... always helping people while doing so. May he know all the wonderful thoughts and prayers each person sends to him now. May each person who knew him remember the good he brought to the world. - Posted by: Donna Johnson (former colleague) on: Jan 03, 2014

  • Our friendship went back to the fifties and Bobby always had a kind word to say. He will be missed by all those who he touched. - Posted by: John Gislason (Friend) on: Jan 03, 2014

  • I remember Bob when I was a student at Happy Thought School in the 1970's and '80's. He was very supportive of aspirations to be a musician and music teacher not only as a student but later on when I attended university, did my practicum at West St. Paul School and as church organist at Knox in Selkirk where he was a member. Though he will always be "Mr. Jefferson" to me and many others, we were also friends. Another great memory I have is "Jog for Jefferson" from HTS days. My sympathy to Doreen and his family. RIP Bob! - Posted by: Scott & Mary Ann Wazney (Former student/mentor and friend) on: Jan 03, 2014

I am saddened that I cannot be in Selkirk to celebrate his life because unfortunately I have never gotten around to getting a passport, but I will be doing that very soon. • I was very sorry to hear of Bob Jefferson's passing. Selkirk was so lucky to have such a person so committed to his community and always working to make it a better place for the families of Selkirk especially the youth. If I remember one thing about my days in Happy Thought School while Mr. Jefferson was present in the halls, etc, it was how 'super' he thought each and every kid was! My parents took a winter vacation and Mr. Jefferson picked us up each day in his station wagon from my Aunt's house in Selkirk and made sure we got to and from school safely. What a great guy then and each and every day after that. Selkirk has lost one of a kind. RIP and may you reunite with all the other great members of our community that have also been taken too soon. - Posted by: Jodi Unik (Former Student and Family Friend) on: Jan 01, 2014

  • Bobby J will truly be missed by the community he gave so much to, whether it was through his positive support and endless hours of volunteerism or financially. I was fortunate to have worked with Bob on The Festival on the Red for a few years. It was always the coldest weekend in February but that didn't deter us or other members of the committee. Bob just told us to bundle up! A very memorable time was when Bob escorted Eileen Cyr and I to "The Merch" for the snow machine wind-up and our Loonie Draw. We had quite the time. • What can one say about Bobby Jeff?!!! He was one of a kind, always kind and caring. He taught me in grade 4 in the old Lockport school and in grade 8 in St. Andrews school and he sold my mother's house when she passed away in 2001. He was always very nice to me and would ask about my Mom when I would come home to visit. I knew that I certainly tried his patience with my antics in class making everyone laugh when we should have been paying attention to our lessons. Selkirk has lost a pillar of their society - it'll never be the same. I'll miss you Bobby Jeff!!! - Posted by: Carl Smith (Teacher/Friend) on: Dec 31, 2013

  • Bob was a teacher of mine in grade 6 at St. Andrews School. A great guy with a big smile. After I became a teacher and athletic director at Lord Selkirk Regional Bob was our best supporter as a sponsor of our sports programs, especially the hockey programs when they started up with him purchasing various home sets of uniforms. A very generous heart with a warm smile! We will miss you Bob! My condolences to the family! - Posted by: Jim Schreyer (Student, friend) on: Dec 30, 2013

  • Saying farewell to an old High School buddy from SCI........Bob was one of the good guys.......always a ready smile, a helping hand.....always a cool guy at Club 17 and a friend to everyone.....RIP my friend........Gord Kruger / Comox BC - Posted by: Gordon Kruger (Old friend) on: Dec 29, 2013

  • Saddened when Bill Shead e-mailed me with this. I sat in the same row two seats back from Bob in 11F at old SCI. Every time Bob would leave his seat, David Georgette would put a thumb tack on it. When Bob sat down, he would hit the roof, and threaten to kill David. After a couple of minutes, he would be laughing about it. All Mrs. Browning would say was, "David. you're despicable." So long Bob. Thanks for fun memories. RIP Barry. - Posted by: Barry Durie (High school friend.) on: Dec 29, 2013

  • Bob, with his sister Doreen, was a great supporter of the Selkirk area. Always ready with a smile and a great listener, he was quick to promote his community and encourage investment in its progress. His establishment of Jefferson Realty (Century 21) coincided with a turnaround in the local economy and his promotion and financial support of the Selkirk Foundation has born much fruit. Rest in peace, brother. - Posted by: John and Rosalie Shantz (Big Dollar) (business associates) on: Dec 29, 2013

  • A great and sad loss to Selkirk and all Bobby's friends, to Doreen and family my heartfelt sympathy to lose such a lovely man. My late husband Walt and Bobby went to school together and I had the privilege of meeting Bobby when I moved to Selkirk in the 1970's. What a wise man, a good friend, funny and compassionate, he always made time to talk and have a coffee, he will be missed so much. - Posted by: Gwenyth A Marsh (Friend) on: Dec 29, 2013

  • Apart of this community is gone and will never be replaced. To know Bob was to be unjudged and accepted for who you were and not what you were. He made you believe in yourself. A true gentleman. I will miss you but will never forget you . - Posted by: Gary telenko (Student and friend ) on: Dec 29, 2013

  • Bob was a "super" positive, kind and unassuming person who contributed not only as an educator, but also as an entrepreneur and philanthropist. I enjoyed working with him in his capacity as school principal, to promote literacy and the love of learning in students and the community. After he left the education system, he created an impressive "second career" of real estate success and community work. My sincere condolences to his sister, family, friends and associates. - Posted by: Barbara Kelly (school division colleague) on: Dec 28, 2013

  • Mr Jefferson was my homeroom teacher way way back in grade 7 or 8 at St Andrews school. He was a cool guy even then, I recall he had a hot car.. a Pontiac 2+2 if I remember correctly.. I never stayed in touch, more's the pity, but I am am aware that he stayed a cool guy right through. Goodbye Mr J. - Posted by: Neil Bradley (Former student) on: Dec 28, 2013

  • Great loss to the Selkirk Community and friends who knew him. Bob had big heart when it came to helping charities, and always cheerful. - Posted by: Inger Robertsen (Friend, Business Assoc.) on: Dec 28, 2013

  • I had the wonderful privilege of knowing Mr. Jefferson when I met him as a student, he was not only a great person but a wonderful principal. He gave me so many chances and even though I was a hard student he never gave up on me. Over the many years after graduating from high school he still would ask my brother and family how I was doing. I just saw him not that long ago while Christmas shopping, it was nice running into him and him seeing my two sons. Thank you Mr.Jefferson for giving me so many chances, not giving up on me, treating me like a human being and giving me so much love and support, showing me and teaching me respect and values. SO many life lessons learned from you, I remember all those times I sat in your office and we talked, I will remember those talks and you gave me so much hope. Thank you Mr. Jefferson you will be missed. - Posted by: Pamela Martin (friend/student) on: Dec 28, 2013
