ELVIRA LETKEMAN July 20, 1926 - December 23, 2013 Peacefully, on December 23, after a brief illness and surrounded by family, Mom left this world for a better place. Predeceased by her parents Helene and Isaac and her brother Ike and sisters Helen and Anne, Elvira is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Frank, her children, Gary (Lynn), Leslie (Phil), Deborah (Dennis), Sandra (Glenn) and Tamara (Mike) as well as grandchildren Holly, Scott, Ian, Derek and Kelsey. Elvira was born on July 20, 1926, in Drake, Sask. and grew up on a farm in the Dirty Thirties. Her family didn't have a lot of money, but they had the love and support of each other. The family eventually moved to Winnipeg, and in 1948 she met Frank. They were married in 1952. Elvira left her job as an insurance underwriter before the birth of her first child and dedicated her life to her family. She was the bookkeeper for Frank's business, and after his retirement she re-entered the workforce as an office worker. After her retirement, she volunteered with Pregnancy Distress and the Spence Street Thrift Shop. Mom was an amazing baker; her pies were legendary. She was an accomplished seamstress who created beautiful outfits for her children, including bridesmaid dresses and a wedding dress. In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial celebration of her life will be held on Monday, December 30, 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn, 4000 Portage Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
