DOUGLAS DAVIDSON SMITH On Saturday, December 21, 2013 at the age of 84, Douglas Davidson Smith passed away peacefully at the Victoria General Hospital, Winnipeg Manitoba. Doug was born October 17, 1929 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He completed grade 10 at Kelvin High then pursued a career as an electrician. The majority of his career as a journeyman electrician was spent with Imperial Oil Refinery and Deer Lodge Hospital, retiring in 1993. Dad met his sweetheart and wife Gwen (Blakely) of 61 years at Earl Grey School. Together they built their first home in St. Vital and started a family. In 1960, they purchased a lot at Bird Lake and built their dream cottage. Dad enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and friends at the cottage hunting, fishing, boating, playing cards and hosting an annual corn roast. Visitors were welcome and the bar was always open. In his retirement years he enjoyed travelling with mom and developed a passion for gardening, cooking and baking. The aroma of fresh baked bread was the envy of neighbours and bears. Dad is survived by his wife Gwen, sons Gary (Tracey), Wayne (Sandra) and daughter Lexie (Darrell). Grandchildren Jodie (Phil), Lindsey, Nicole (Chris), Bryden and Keenan. Sister Jeannine (Herb) Markevich, Calgary AB, sister-in-law Evelyn Mullins, Richmond Hill, ON and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his mother Lexie and father Jim. Dad, until we meet again, may you rest in peace. The family would like to thank Dr. Fayez Salem, Victoria General Hospital fourth floor staff, and the Fort Garry Fraternal Order of Eagles. A special thanks to Nicole and Kevin for spending numerous hours at the hospital with dad. A celebration of dad's life will take place on January 11, 2014 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. (3:00 p.m. presentation) at the Fort Garry Fraternal Order of Eagles, 3459 Pembina Hwy. in St. Norbert, Manitoba. A private family interment will take place at St. John's Cemetery in the family plot at a later date. In lieu of flowers, if you so desire, donations may be made in Doug's memory to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), 1101-191 Lombard Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3B 0X1.
