Date of Passing: Dec 26, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMEL (MELVILLE) GOLDENBERG Mel Goldenberg, November 25, 1921 - December 26, 2013, died peacefully at the Grace Hospital. He was predeceased by his wife, Norma, in 1993; his second wife, Dorothy, in 2004; and his companion, Sally Glow, just a few weeks prior to his death, on Friday, December 6, 2013. Mel was predeceased by his parents, Sarah and Moishe Goldenberg, his sister, Bella Cohen, and his brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Ann Goldberg, Ben and Sadie Goldenberg, Jack and Jerry Goldberg and Dave Goldberg. Mel was the last of 32 first cousins. Mel lived a long and happy life, with Norma for 50 years, Dorothy for 10 years and, finally, Sally, for the last ten years. He was an accountant, working in the clothing industry most of his life. At retirement, Mel took on a new position as the manager for Industrial Investments. He was very proud to keep working well into his 80s, finally retiring at 89. He loved his communities - Winnipeg, where he was born and lived most of his life and his Jewish community. He was proud to contribute as a fundraiser for the Brandeis Lodge. He was most happy with his large extended family. He loved our family get-togethers. Our house was always a gathering place, with riotous meals that included family, friends and visitors brought home by his children, laughing, discussing and arguing. In his later years, Mel moved into the Portsmouth Retirement Home, where he found a whole new community. He was very comfortable there and took pride in the fact that he had made it from his childhood Jarvis Avenue home to Tuxedo. Mel is survived by his children, Heather Cram (Patrick Boyce), Murray (José Vaillancourt) and Perry (Brenda Summers); his grandchildren, Laurel Hogan (Tim), Ben Cram (Terra Ogawa), Shoshana Goldenberg; his great-grandchildren, Olivia and Finn Hogan and Tomi and Keiko Cram. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Carol Volk, Geri Altman and Larry Altman, Murray Glow (Martha Dorion) and his many stepgrandchildren and great-grandchildren. The funeral took place on Sunday, December 27 at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue. Our family would like to thank the Portsmouth staff and residents for their care and kindness to Mel during his last years. We also want to express our appreciation to the Grace hospital doctors, nurses and aids, who took such good care of Mel during his last days there. Donations may be made to the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba.

I have very fond memories of family get togethers with all my Zaida Bill's brothers. I was also close to my Auntie Bella. Uncle Mel was very sharp and I always enjoyed talking with him. He had a great sense of humour. When in Winnipeg I visited at the Portsmouth a number of times and it was great to see him "hold court". I know he will be greatly missed by all the Plotkin Klan. - Posted by: Stephen Plotkin (Great Nephew. ) on: Jan 04, 2014
