• Aunty Doris was a good friend and mentor, and we will sure miss her. She always remembered her friends and family, and over the years, made annual trips out to the coast to see her sister, my Mom, Helen. After Mom's passing, she still continued her forays out to Vancouver and the Okanagan, to visit with her nieces and nephews. She had a gift for making each of us feel special. We were privileged to have her stay with us for a week each year. She could entertain us for hours with stories of prairie life on the farm. We were already planning for her trip out this February. In advance, we had purchased a fireplace for our family room to keep her cozy. Guess I will never look at that fireplace again, without thinking about what a special lady she was in our lives. • As my sisters noted before me, Doris was a great favorite of the Cook family. Her wonderful warm laugh, her sallies, her humorous anecdotes and straightforward common sense made her visits relaxed and happy. She and Mom had such great camaraderie! • Doris was a long-time friend of my parents, so I knew her all of my life. She was raised in the Croppertops district, where my dad and his family (the Cook family) were raised, and she and my mom, the former Jackie Silverthorn, were school friends. I remember looking forward to fun visits when Doris, often accompanied by members of her family, came to the farm and I remember visits our family made to her place in Winnipeg. When I was grown, I made visits myself to her place, especially when I first moved to the city and didn't know many people. She was a delightful hostess! For the Santa Claus parade, she told us to not worry about finding a parking spot, but to just park at her place and walk; it was perfect. Annual Christmas cards and letters went back and forth regularly over the years and I will cherish the last one I received from Doris, written Dec. 4, 2013. In it, she said she'd just enjoyed a tour of Croppertops, including driving past my parents' farm, in September. A lovely lady and good friend always! • Doris was a life long friend of our family having been a childhood friend of my Mom, Jackie Cook. She was always smiling and laughing and busy as a bee! When my siblings and I moved to the city she would have us over for those fabulous meals that she made. She graced us with visits whenever our parents were in the city.
