GAIL PATRICIA HOLLAND (nee POSPISHELL) April 11, 1948 - January 3, 2014 After a brief struggle with cancer, Gail Patricia Holland passed away peacefully at the Grace Hospice in Winnipeg at the age of 65 years. Gail was predeceased by her husband John in 1998 and by her father Roy in 2007. She is survived by her daughter Joanne (Adam); her mother Fern; her siblings Garry (Sharon), June (Dan), and Craig (Carol); her sister-in-law Lillian (Allen); her nephews Jeff, David (Michelle), and Dylan; and her grand-nephews Henry and Liam. Gail was a graduate of Daniel McIntyre Collegiate and the University of Winnipeg. She enjoyed a fulfilling career as an elementary school teacher in the Winnipeg School Division #1 for over thirty years. She taught at Somerset School, Earl Grey School, and Rockwood School, and remained close to former colleagues and students after her retirement. Gail spent her retirement travelling and volunteering her time at a number of local organizations. Most recently, she led a widow's support group for Creative Retirement. Gail was a fan of the arts: she held season's tickets to the Manitoba Theatre Centre, and regularly attended performances at the Shaw and Stratford theatre festivals in Ontario. A celebration of Gail's life will be held at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue (across from Brookside Cemetery) at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 11, 2014, with a reception to follow. A separate interment at Brookside Cemetery will be held privately for family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Gail to the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation (www.cancercarefdn.mb.ca), or to a charity of the donor's choice. The family would particularly like to thank staff at the St. Boniface Hospital and Grace Hospice for their excellent care and treatment. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

Condolences & Memories (16 entries)

  • Dear Joanne, I have just learned of the loss of Gail and I am so sad that we had not connected in such a long time. She was so very proud of you, and loved to remind me of our shared birthday. I will always remember Gail with great fondness. Suzanne Adkins - Posted by: Suzanne Adkins (Friend) on: Jul 07, 2014

  • Gail Holland. The most spontaneous person I ever met. A smile was her signature and enjoying life her aim. Her students loved her and fell into her love of stories like Charlotte's Web with complete abandon. Gail kept improving herself with courses and exercise regimens. Her aspirations were limitless. I admired her greatly. She never made our friendship contingent on whether I behaved one way or another. I drank too much - she loved me. I smoked - she loved me. Please God, make more Gails. - Posted by: Margaret Shabaga (friend and colleague) on: Jan 15, 2014

  • Dear Joanne, Adam, Pospishell and Holland families, our deepest sympathies to you on the loss of your dearly beloved mother, daughter, sister and aunt. We reconnected upon the passing of my own mom and it was lovely for the "little girls" to have that time while we could. Thanks for the memories Gail, and now your beautiful daughter will carry on with her loving husband, treasuring those times you had together. - Posted by: Sylvia cassie (Childhood friend) on: Jan 11, 2014

  • Joanne, I was saddened to learn of your mother's illness and passing. She was always your great supporter. Her integrity and optimistic tenacity will always inspire you. Take care of yourself. - Posted by: Donna Goodman (Joanne's teacher) on: Jan 11, 2014

  • Fern, I am so sorry to hear about Gail, I know you will miss her. I am glad that I had the opportunity to meet and get to know her briefly through the CHIP program. She was a genuinely, thoughtful person and had a beautiful smile. She had your carefree personality. I know your faith in God is strong and He will bring you through this difficult time. Remember the good times. God be with you and your family. - Posted by: Ruth Best (friend) on: Jan 10, 2014

  • I had the honor of your mom teaching me at Earl Grey School in grade 3, 1969. She made such an impression on me that I would come back to her class and volunteer.
