REV. JACK McLACHLAN
Date of Passing: Dec 25, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryREV. JACK McLACHLAN Beloved husband, father, grandpa, uncle and friend to all, passed away peacefully in White Rock, BC on December 25, 2013. Jack died on the morning we celebrate the birth of "the Prince of Peace", the One who was anointed to "bring good news to the poor and to set the oppressed free". Jack was predeceased by his parents, Gordon and Amy, his sister and brother-in-law, Audrey and Ted Bish and his in-laws, Bruce and Melissa Sutherland. Jack was born in Carman, MB, attended schools in rural Manitoba and graduated from Treherne, MB High School. He joined Air Cadets at 14 and became captivated with aviation. In retirement, he was involved with Civil Air Search and Rescue. After graduation, he successfully operated McLachlan Electric in Treherne wiring many rural farms for the first time. He also owned and operated the local movie theatre. During this time, he met and married his wife of nearly 60 years, Margaret (Sutherland). During the early 1950s, Jack felt called to the Ministry of the United Church of Canada, graduating from the U. of W. in 1959 with an Arts and Theology Degree. During his 35 year career, he and Margaret raised three children, Bruce, Mary and Brian, and served four charges: Steinbach, Carman, Dauphin and Winnipeg. In 1978, he initiated the Inter-Church Task Force on Northern Flooding which encouraged the formation of the Northern Flood Committee. The Committee represented Northern Manitoba communities in negotiations with Manitoba Hydro, for promised compensation for loss of land and livelihood caused by Hydro's dam building. These negotiations led to the ratification of the Northern Flood Agreement and the committee was disbanded in 1990. Jack built the family cabin in 1960 at Lake of the Woods and many summer vacations were enjoyed and treasured memories created there with family and friends. After retiring to White Rock, BC in 2001, Jack continued his passion for social justice by starting "The Social Justice Film Festival", which is now in its 10th year. Jack said many times, his bones, like those of the Prophet Jeremiah's, cried out for justice in the world. On July 1, 2013, the City of White Rock presented the "Outstanding Canadian on the Peninsula" award to Jack for his work with Social Justice. Jack will be forever remembered and sadly missed by: his wife and partner, Margaret, his son Bruce (Vicki); grandchildren, Amber (Audi) and B.J. (Beth) and great-grandchildren, Emmersyn, Carter and Samuel Leavitt and Ava McLachlan; his daughter Mary (Mike); grandchildren Marde Holt (fiancé Daniel) and Jim Holt; son Brian (Fiona); grandson Christopher and his special niece, Linda Bish of Winnipeg. Celebration of Life will take place, Saturday, January 11, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at White Rock First United Church, 15385 Semiahmoo Ave., White Rock, BC. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Social Justice Film Society, 28, 2780 150th Street, Surrey, BC V4P 1P1, or White Rock First United Church, 15385 Semiahmoo Ave., White Rock, BC V4B 1T6 or a charity of your choice.

I just came across this obituary as I was catching up on my reading of the U of M Alumni journal. I have such fond memories of your family and especially special times with Mary. Sending a special prayer for your family, it sounds like your husband, father, grandfather continued to lead an amazing life! Hi Margaret; Sorry to hear of your loss. I worked for Jack in Treherne and got my electrical and projectionist license through him. It enabled me to eventually join the CBC and I truly enjoyed my 35 years there. All this would have never come about if I hadn't worked for Jack. To me he was a great man and I was thankful to have known him in my lifetime. He will be missed. Bob McQuay - Posted by: Bob McQuay (Friend) on: Jan 14, 2014

Jack was my first employer. we worked the wiring of arms & he also taught me hoe to operate the theater. That brought me to Kenora where I met my wife to be and eventually joined the On. Prov. Police where I served 30 years. Jack & I along with Bob McQuay could always find a laugh somewhere. Sorry for the loss of a good friend. - Posted by: Robert J. McMillin (Cousin) on: Jan 13, 2014

We've only had the privilege of knowing Jack and Margaret since moving to White Rock 5 years ago, both through First United. Susan knew Jack through the Committee for the Social Justice Film Festival and a class Jim taught; Margaret through Gogos, the Grandmothers to Grandmothers campaign, which Jack supported on the walk-a-thons. I valued Jack's continued commitment to social justice instead of "retiring to the golf course." I valued his liberal theology, his wisdom, his listening ability and openness to other viewpoints, his gentleness even in his fight for justice. Jack will be missed by Margaret and their family and friends, by First United congregation, and by the community he served. - Posted by: Susan & Jim Lindenberger ("RCo-Jerimiahs") on: Jan 09, 2014

Bruce, Vicki, Mary, Brian, Margaret, I am sorry to read of your loss. Although you would not know it, I thought of your father, husband, often over the years. The feelings accompanying those thoughts was always a sense of calm and a sense of someone who listened from the heart. When a part of your childhood reflects into your adult years in such a way, it is a strong testament to a man's legacy on this earth. He will be held in the hearts of many. - Posted by: Cathy (Kitching) Gamble (Classmate) on: Jan 08, 2014
