RICHARD THOMAS CULLEN September 4, 1942 - January 7, 2014 On Tuesday, January 7, 2014 Richard, eldest child of Bernie and Merne (deceased), passed away at Lake of the Woods Hospital, Kenora, Ontario. Richard will be missed greatly by his sister, Judy Kidd (David), his brother, Ted (Barb), his nephews, Scott (Karen) and Ryan, and his niece, Janie (Dirk), along with many extended family members. As well, he will be remembered by devoted friends, Cookie Wicks, Don Poustie (Drinda), Al Mowat and Paul (Brigitte) Gauthier. For much of his life, Richard worked as a salesman in home improvements. As he was a very social person who loved meeting new people, he thrived in his chosen field. When he wasn't working he could often be found at the bridge club as he was also a very skilled duplicate bridge player. Richard was a free spirit, larger than life who lived life on his terms. He loved to be free - free to drive his truck on the open road and free to guide his boats (and he had many!) over the waters of Lake of the Woods and the Winnipeg River. He was such a generous soul who received great pleasure and joy from sharing all that he had - his home, his "toys" and his passion for lake life. He will be remembered by so many as the ultimate "Candy Man". At this time we would like to thank Dr. Kroeker, Dr. Wehner, Dr. Wiebe and all the staff on the third floor of Lake of the Woods District Hospital who provided Richard with such outstanding care throughout these past four weeks. We are most grateful. A heartfelt thanks goes to his cherished friend, Cookie, who remained by his side. At Richard's request immediate cremation has taken place. At a later date his family and friends will gather to remember the special person he was. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations to Lake of the Woods Hospital Foundation, 21 Sylvan Street, Kenora, Ontario, P9N 3W7, or to a charity of choice would be appreciated.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Richard was my landlord in 2007 when I was working in Kenora. He was a funny, caring and free-spirited guy. I considered him to be a father figure. To this date, I re-call the memories of Kenora and the times I had spent on his boat and chilling out with him at his cottage home. You will be missed big guy!! Cheers, Gurpreet - Posted by: Gurpreet Matharu (Friend, Ex-Landlord) on: Jun 26, 2014

  • We will always remember Richard as a kind and generous person and ultimate host. The time spent on the houseboat at Minaki and the loads of candy for our grandchildren really showed his generosity. The world has lost a very special person. We will miss his larger than life friendship. We are sure he will be navigating the Lake of the Woods waters every time we are there. Thanks for the good times Richard! You will be missed. - Posted by: Linda and Ralph Dube (Friends) on: Jan 22, 2014

  • Richard was very kind to me in my younger years. I remember him transporting me from Regina to Winnipeg when I would have a fight with my parents. We are saddened with the news of Richard's passing. Our hearts and prayers are with the family. - Posted by: Tom and Cheryl Tedford (Cousin) on: Jan 21, 2014
