DAVID ANDREW MARKUS Suddenly on January 6, 2014 David Andrew Markus, of Niverville, MB, brother, uncle and husband passed away at the age of 58. Predeceased by his father Sam, mother Ruth, sister Darlene and close friend, Lalah Casselman, David is survived by his husband, Rob Lindey, sister, Donna (Reg) Forester, brothers, Ernie, Alex (Terry), Kevin, Derek, mother-in-law Helen Lindey, aunts Sandra (John) Unger, Flo (John) Barbour, Jackie Brignall, and Vera Halbert, uncles Don Allen, Ted (Sandra) Allen, brothers-in-law Brad Lindey and Murray Lindey, nieces and nephews Melissa Forester, Shawna (Brent) Forester Smith, Brandy (Sean) Sylvestre, Chantelle (Len) Markus, Ryan (Lindsey), Justin, Brendan, Katie, Jade, Taime, Drake Markus and Bradley Lindey. David found the true love of his life in his husband, Rob Lindey on a warm July evening in 1979. Early in their relationship David insisted that Rob go back to University and attain his dream of becoming a lawyer. David, who was well known as a "planner", supported Rob through that journey and saw the dream come true when Rob was called to the Bar in 1996. Mentored by his friend Sue-Ellyn Rempel, David successfully operated his own dog grooming shop in Elmwood for 29 years. He and Rob fell in love with the graceful lines and temperament of the whippet and founded Aikerskaill Kennels in 1984. Together, they bred, raised, and exhibited whippets for 30 years. With the guidance of Dr. Barbara Henderson of Maryland and in partnership with Harriett Nash Lee of Virginia, their presence in the Best in Show ring was definitely felt. Many Canadian and international champion whippets carry the "Aikerskaill" prefix. David took his love of dog's to the next level by becoming an "All Breed" Canadian Kennel Club judge. This journey allowed David and Rob to travel extensively as David was asked to judge at dog shows in the United States, New Zealand, Australia, Japan and the Philippines. David was well respected both at home and abroad for his innate ability to find outstanding dogs. David was the President and Show Chairman of the Manitoba Canine Association, founding member and Treasurer of the Assiniboine Kennel Club, founding member and first President of the National Whippet Club of Canada, member of the Canadian Kennel Club and the American Whippet Club. His family expresses their deepest thanks to Dr. Brian Malcy and staff of the Selkirk Mental Health Centre and Dr. David Willems of Nine Circles Community Health Centre for their compassionate care of David; as well as the assistance and professionalism of staff at the St-Pierre-Jolys R.C.M.P. and District 4 Winnipeg Police Service. A celebration of David's life will be held Saturday, January 18, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Winnipeg, 603 Wellington Cres., Winnipeg, MB. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Mental Health Association Winnipeg www.cmhawpg.mb.ca; the Companion Animal Health Fund, University of Saskatoon www.usask.cahf; the Whippet Health Foundation www.whippethealth.org; or a charity of your choice.

  • David was my first local Grooming mentor (subsidising my income working for him while building my own in-client home mobile business), we met through a mutual friend, he mentored me and had me run his shop whenever he was out of town at Dog Shows. He was a firm but fair man, and humanitarian EXTRAORDINAIRE! Love & Light for all that you were in this life David, and all that you are forever. with gratitude. • David was a very dear friend to us & our children (J, M &N). They & us will miss him terribly. They were always absolutely Bonkers when they saw him, & recognized his name-altho' they did not always recognize our names!! He was always there to help us & visited Arthur in the hospital just a few weeks ago. We are in shock for Rob, their families & his friends. He will be greatly missed, but never forgotten. Certainly not by us. We have the most wonderful memories of David. He will always be with us. Shalom. - Posted by: Ken & Arthur Blankstein-Ure (Jefferson, Martha & Nicholas) (Friends & "Children" of David. ) on: Jan 11, 2014

  • Collectively and individually we knew David for more than 20 years. He was always a kind, helpful and considerate person, a knowledgeable dog show judge, and a willing source of assistance whenever needed. He was the driving force behind two of Manitoba's largest all-breed dog shows. David's smile and presence will be sorely missed. Our most sincere condolences to his family and close friends. Rest in peace, David. - Posted by: Sherrie and Cam Sparling (Acquaintances) on: Jan 11, 2014

  • there is so much to remember Dave for - his knowledge, his help, his great fun days and his sad days. He was a really human "dog person". He will be missed every day when we will want to ask his opinion and can't. Our sympathy to Rob and all the family and friends.
