SIEBOUTJE (KAY) JONKMAN (nee WESTRA) December 28, 1935 - January 10, 2014 It is with the deepest sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Mother and Grandmother. Kay passed away surrounded by her family after a brief battle with cancer. Kay was predeceased by her husband Johannes (John), the love of her life, in 1998. She was also predeceased by her parents Hoite and Ida Westra. She leaves behind her three children, Ida (Ray); Linda (John); and Ronald (Kriss), and her grandchildren Allison, Ashley (Doug), Andrea, Megan, Rebecca and Ian. Also left to mourn are her siblings Harmen (Ann), Weiger (Gwen), Antje (Peter), Anno, and Alida, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister-in-law Julie and brother-in-law John. Kay was fortunate to have a large family both near and far, and many great friends. Born in Friesland, The Netherlands in 1935, Kay's early years were lived in troubled times as war shaped the lives of her and her family and friends. She learned the value of love and kindness during those days and these values shaped her entire life. She met the love of her life John in Friesland and it was a romance that would see John cross the ocean to follow his beloved Boutje, and her entire family to Canada in 1955. John would work his way from Saskatchewan to Winnipeg, but had to wait until 1957 to finally get permission from Kay's father to marry. Starting with very little they began to build their lives together, both working to save money and buy a small home in the North End. Kay worked for a few years at Eaton's before leaving to start her family. She and John worked hard in those early years, and moved to their dream home on the outskirts of Winnipeg, where they raised their family. When her youngest started school she returned to work, driving a school bus for River East School Division. She would drive many children to school during her 20 years driving bus, but enjoyed most driving special needs children to and from their school. After retiring she and John enjoyed camping and fishing in the summer, and trips to Texas in the winter. John passed away all too young, but Kay showed her true strength in those years following John's death. She moved into Country Villas in East St. Paul in 1999 and made many new friends. She was always available for her grandchildren and their many events and activities and enjoyed playing cards, knitting, babysitting, and enjoying sports. She loved to travel near and far with John, her brothers and sisters, with her children, grandchildren and friends, and was planning a trip yet again when she became ill. She will be deeply missed by the many lives she touched, and always remembered. Following a private interment, a memorial service is to be held at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 708 McCalman Avenue, on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at 12:00 noon. The family wishes to express their gratitude to all the staff at St. Boniface Hospital, and especially the Palliative Care Unit for their compassionate care. For those who choose, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba in Kay's name. For those who wish to sign the online guest book please visit our website. www.chapellawn.ca 885-9715
