ETHEL DOREEN SAINSBURY (nee STRAND) June 14, 1915 - January 5, 2014 It is with great sadness that we share news of the passing of Ethel Sainsbury at the Bethany Care Society residence in Calgary, at the age of 98. She passed peacefully, in the company of family. Ethel was predeceased by husband Arthur, and son Ernest. She is survived by daughter Geraldine, and son Thomas. Ethel was the proud grandmother to eight and great-grandmother to nine Ethel was born in Dauphin, Manitoba in June of 1915 and grew up on her parents' farm in the Wilford District and moved to the Spruce Creek District when she married Arthur and raised her family there before moving into Dauphin. She was employed in the food services area of the Dauphin Hospital for a number of years. Ethel was an avid golfer. She enjoyed bowling and quilting, as well. Her time spent golfing with family and friends was a treasured memory. She enjoyed gardening and always had beautiful sweet peas and iris in the yard. The tastiest corn in Dauphin was harvested from her vegetable garden and rushed to her welcoming kitchen for immediate consumption. Her quilts remain with us as a beautiful testimonial to her memory. Ethel retained her fondness for music, enjoying a performance at Bethany Care by the Calgary Philharmonic this Fall and singing carols at Christmas Eve service. Although occasionally touched by dementia, Ethel retained her sense of time and place until she left us and her dry humour continued to delight all those around her. Funeral services will take place at Sneath-Strilchuk Funeral Home in Dauphin at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 18, 2014, preceded by viewing commencing at 1:00 p.m. Light refreshments will be served after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Society of Canada (www.alzheimers.ca).

I had the pleasure of meeting and visiting with Ethel a few times at Bethany. She was a sweetheart. I was sorry to hear of her passing. - Posted by: Monique (Volunteer at Bethany Care Centre) on: Jan 22, 2014
