EDWARD STANLEY WRIGHT
Date of Passing: Jan 11, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryEDWARD STANLEY WRIGHT Edward Stanley Wright died at Lions Manor Personal Care Centre in Winnipeg on Saturday, January 11, 2014 with family at his side. Edward was 91 years of age. Predeceased by his wife Helen, sister Pearl and brother Cliff he is survived by his daughter Charlotte (Paul), sons Morley and Robert; grandchildren Kirsten (Louis), Stephanie (Chris) and Christopher (Tiffany); Jason (Kerrie) and Jeffrey; Lauren, Samantha and Danny and eight great-grandchildren. He will be missed by brothers Lloyd (Marion) and Allan (Jeanne). Born in Saskatchewan and raised in the Tiger Hills on a farm near Treherne, Manitoba, Edward lived a full life in the midst of a close family and many friends. Edward worked on the family farm with brother Cliff, enjoyed a distinguished 43 year career as a locomotive engineer with Canadian National Railway, and travelled from coast to coast with his family on extended holidays on the train. On his days off he worked on the Prairie Dog Central as one of the last qualified engineers, "wrote up on steam". Steam was in his blood. Edward had two great-passions in life. One was Helen and the other the railroad. He was nowhere more content than to be at the throttle of a locomotive hurtling through the countryside into the darkness of a frozen prairie winter night with a load of freight for Thunder Bay or passengers bound for the "Sioux", while we were all in bed. He is also fondly remembered by holiday makers as that cheerful fellow running the Camper Special out to cottage country east of Winnipeg. In his later years Edward travelled several times to Europe, visited family, attended Canadian War Memorials and paid tribute to the "boys" of his generation who had served their country overseas. Edward was a proud lifelong member of the Royal Canadian Legion; himself having served in the Royal Canadian Artillery. Edward will be remembered for his handsome good looks, ready smile, approachable and cheerful manner, commitment to family, abundant optimism and readiness to lend a hand to a worthy cause. But it was mostly about the trains and the boy in the train. He never ceased to marvel at this mechanical wonder and was pleased and proud to have been a part of this great adventure. So when you hear a train whistle blow in the middle of the night, ask not for whom the whistle blows. It blows for Ted. The family is grateful for the caring support given to Edward and his family by the staff of the Lions Manor Personal Care Centre and for the close supportive friendship of Jean Dyker. A funeral service and Celebration of Life will take place at St. Stephen's Anglican Church, 220 Helmsdale Avenue in East Kildonan on Thursday, January 30 at 2:00 p.m. A light lunch will be served after the service. Private family burial will take place in the summer. According to Edward's wishes, cremation has taken place.
