MATTHEW JOHN GARTH NOSWORTHY April 5, 1951 - January 9, 2014 After a short, but courageous battle with cancer, it is with love and great sadness, that we announce the passing of Garth Nosworthy on Thursday, January 9, 2014, at the age of 62 years. Garth's final days were spent surrounded by family, friends and the unwavering love and dedication of his wife of 40 years of marriage, Leslie Nosworthy. Left to cherish Garth's memory are his wife Leslie; daughter Lindsay; son Gregory; brother Donald Nosworthy; as well as many lifelong friends and family. He was predeceased by his parents, Matthew Nosworthy; Jean Nosworthy; stepmom Dorothy Nosworthy; and his sister Ann MacKellar. Born and raised in Winnipeg, Garth attended Montrose Elementary School, Grant Park High School and the University of Winnipeg. He learned to play guitar starting at the age of five. By the time he was 12 years old, Garth was playing in The Sonics, TC and the Provincials, and then The Mongrels. Being an avid part of the 1960s Winnipeg music rock scene, The Mongrels, managed by Lorne Saifer and produced by Randy Bachman, signed with RCA USA and then Capital Records USA. Over the past 20 years, he continued his love of music and performing which led to the incarnation of the Family/Children's Entertainers "Just Kiddin". Just Kiddin' released three CDs, two of which were nominated for a Prairie Music Award and one "Imagination" won the Prairie Music Award for Outstanding Children's Entertainment. Garth became an air traffic controller on January 17, 1972, where he worked until his retirement in January 24, 2007. Starting in Thunder Bay Tower and then onto Regina Tower, Garth returned to Winnipeg Tower in 1974 and then ultimately worked in the Winnipeg Area Control Centre, Terminal, as a Supervisor, until his retirement. After retirement, he returned to work for two years, teaching air traffic control, which Garth enjoyed immensely. He was a man of many talents and of great commitment. He will be remembered for his quick wit and fabulous sense of humour. Garth's loyalty, generosity of his time and spirit will outlive his memory. He worked tirelessly as President of Ecole Tuxedo Park Parent Council to successfully prevent the school's closure. Garth coached his son's hockey teams over the years and was loved by the kids he coached. Garth was always running someone's campaign, planning retirement parties and tributes to anyone he felt deserving. Nothing was ever too much trouble and he had a heart of gold. Leslie and Garth had the opportunity to travel over the past few years to Europe and more recently New York where they celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. The many family vacations to Hawaii were his favourite and he felt so fortunate to have that time together with Leslie, Lindsay and Greg. Garth was an incredible father, always being there for his kids at every ballet recital, swimming lesson, hockey game and band concert. His family was his life and he will be dearly missed. A Celebration of Garth's life will be held on Thursday, January 16, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Mary's Anglican Church, 3830 Roblin Boulevard. The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff at Health Sciences Centre for their compassionate care. Also thank you to our dear friends, Cliff Levi and Pat Benjaminson for all of your help at a very difficult time. Condolences & Memories (26 entries)

  • I realize this is late, but we just heard about Garth's passing from one of his air traffic co-workers today. We were both shocked and extremely sorry to hear his productive loving life was cut so short. We remember him fondly from the Ecole Tuxedo Park parent council days and his 'Just Kiddin' band. Our deepest sympathies Leslie, Lindsay & Greg. A good man taken too soon. - Posted by: Wendy Haegeman & Denis Wanlin (Friends from Ecole Tuxedo Park days) on: Feb 15, 2015

  • I was saddened when I heard this news. Garth and I went to high school together and later I was able to say to so many, that the Garth in The Mongrels is my buddy. My sincere condolences to the family. He was as they say, "one of the good guys" and he will be missed. - Posted by: Chuck Guberman (Friend) on: Jan 25, 2014

  • Leslie, I was so very sorry to read of Garth's death too soon. In the few encounters you and I have had over the years you seemed as happy and lovely as in your youth so I know that was in large part due to a happy marriage and fulfilled life. Please know that I am thinking of you and your family at this saddest of times. Sunny - Posted by: Alison Boyd Mudry (childhood friend of Leslie's) on: Jan 19, 2014

  • My deepest sympathies to the Nosworthy family. I had the pleasure of knowing Garth when I lived with my parents on Charleswood road. Always there to lend a hand or have a good laugh. My fondest memory of Garth is when he would walk his dog past our house, stop at the end of the driveway and call my dog, "Sparky". She would jump the five foot fence and they would proceed on their walk. Returning after, stopping at the driveway and sending her back over the fence. Thank you, God Bless - Posted by: Joel Kehler (Neibor) on: Jan 16, 2014

  • Leslie, Lindsay and Greg We are sad to hear about the sudden passing of Garth. The weather has been cold this winter and we haven't seen the both of you walking hand and hand with the dog by the house. You always had a big smile on your face. We can't express our sorrow for you at this time. Michael and Laurette Subchak (Matlock Neighbors) - Posted by: The Subchak Family (Matlock Cres) on: Jan 16, 2014

  • I grew up with Garth on Ash Street and he was a big part of both me and my brother's growing up. I can recall band practices in his father's garage when he played for "The Mongrels"; all the neighbors kids filled the back lane blocking traffic. I missed an opportunity to meet Garth at Nickel Days in Thompson a few years ago to relive our past experiences. Garth was SPECIAL and from our Family to his Garth will be sadly missed but forever remembered. - Posted by: Don Aikman (Friend) on: Jan 16, 2014

  • Garth and I go back many years. We grew up together. He lived across the back lane from my house and during our elementary school years we were joined at the hip. We shared a passion for music and spent countless hours with Duncan W., Terry C., and Larry D. practicing music in our basements. Garth and I would spend Saturdays going up and down Portage Avenue in and out of every music store looking for guitar strings. We lost touch through our high school years and when we met 20 years later it was as though time had never passed. Garth was a true and valued friend. Friends like Garth don't come along often. He will genuinely be missed. For the old times...God Bless. - Posted by: Murdo and Laurie MacKenzie ((Friend)) on: Jan 15, 2014

  • I left Winnipeg in 1976 but heard from and of "the Noz" often after that, despite never seeing him over the years. I still smile thinking of hours together on the ice and then when I had hair, playing in our various bands and sharing the love of music. Time and distance never dampen true friendship. The memories and smiles will continue. - Posted by: Marty Koyle (Friend) on: Jan 15, 2014

  • It was so sad to hear of Garth's passing. Garth worked tirelessly to make ecole tuxedo park a wonderful place for all children. His music and cooking ability were inspirational to all the staff, students and community. Garth gave his heart to tuxedo park and we all enjoyed working with him and Leslie. We know he loved his children and that was evident in all he did at the school. My thoughts are with Leslie, Lindsay and Greg - Posted by: Gordon Campbell (Teacher) on: Jan 15, 2014

  • Our deepest sympathies to Leslie, Greg & Lindsay. Garth was always a smiling face and warm hug when we were able to visit. My kids grew up listening to Just Kiddin' and I loved the music as much as they did. You could feel his energy and fun-loving spirit through the songs. Breakfast with Santa is one of our kids favorite memories! Our prayers and thoughts are with you in the future days. - Posted by: Kim Eissner (Cousin) on: Jan 15, 2014

  • Garth was Ted's "coming of age" buddy. Their stories of Garth's Duster and those "Westwood" girls have been recounted many times over the years with the same joy as if they happened yesterday. It was Leslie who introduced me to Garth's friend Ted--for this I will be forever grateful. Garth and Leslie are a true love story--something that is so rare to find these days. Our hearts go out to Leslie, Lindsay and Gregory for their loss. May you find strength in all of the wonderful memories you have of this fantastic guy. • I was shocked and saddened when I heard the news of Garth's passing. Shocked because I had run into Leslie and Garth at a Jets game just a couple of months ago and enjoyed a nice conversation. Everything seemed fine. Saddened because Garth was such a fun guy to know. Early in our working careers, Garth and I discovered that my father had been one of Garth's teachers at Grant Park. It always amused me to think of my very serious father and the not so serious Garth trying to co-exist in the same classroom. Leslie and family, I am so sorry for your loss. My sincerest sympathy. - Posted by: Stan Enns (co-worker and friend) on: Jan 14, 2014

  • Sincere sympathy to Leslie and family. - Posted by: Terry Bialek (Business Associate) on: Jan 14, 2014

  • Garth was an outstanding musician, songwriter and a dear friend. He will be greatly missed. I will remember fondly the many gigs we did together as band mates in Just Kiddin’. I will remember the smiling faces on the kids as Garth invited them on stage and offered them instruments to play and asked them their names. I will remember the sheer energy Garth put into every show and the enthusiastic responses he received from both the kids and their parents. Garth was a kind, loving man who was funny, quick witted and so very generous with his time and friendship. I will miss our breakfasts together and the music we made together over the years. To Leslie, Lindsay and Greg our sincere condolences. I saw first hand the love you had for one another and the love Garth had for you. Words cannot express the deep sorrow I feel for your loss. We will call as soon as we return home. God bless you. - Posted by: Paul & Linda Cerilli (Friends) on: Jan 14, 2014
