MARY L. SAYEAU Born August 18, 1933 near Souris, Manitoba, deceased September 26, 2013 at Hopital Saint-Luc, Montreal, Quebec. Cremated by Aeterna Funeral Home. Ms. Sayeau is survived by her son Tim, sisters Margaret and Alice, nieces Barbara, Darlene and Deborah, and nephews Blaine, Ian and Scott. As a teacher-librarian in schools from Saskatchewan to Bermuda, Ms. Sayeau received many personal and professional accolades, with the following being her favourite. Her nephew Blaine told her of meeting an ex-student of hers. Knowing his Aunt Mary, Blaine said "I'll bet you anything she was the toughest teacher you ever had." The man's response -- "No sh*t, Sherlock' -- was her rightful due. Friends and family of Ms. Sayeau are asked to raise a glass of Irish Cream to her memory while listening to "Don't Cry For Me Argentina".

  • Expanded obituary= Mary L. Sayeau _____ Mary L. Sayeau, born August 18 1933 near Souris, Manitoba, died of pneumonia on September 26 2013 at the Hopital Saint-Luc, Montreal Quebec. She was cremated with a small bottle of Bailey’s Irish Cream, chocolate Turtles, Reese’s peanut butter cups, poppies, and a stuffed toy cat. Having been allergic to cats, an affliction she always held against God, it seemed only right she have that. Ms. Sayeau is survived by her son Timothy, her sisters Margaret and Alice, nephews Blaine, Ian, Scott; nieces Barbara, Deborah, Darlene. Ms. Sayeau worked as a teacher-librarian from 1957 to her retirement in 1992. She began her career at Lilly Hill School Division, Wawanesa Manitoba. Over the years she taught at Snow Lake and at Bozeman, Manitoba, also at Cranberry Portage Elementary and Secondary, then just across the road at Frontier Collegiate Institute. Moving to Quebec in the middle 1970s, she taught at the Sand Park Federal School in Fort George, then Ecole St. Jacques in Radisson. From there she went to Warwick Academy in Bermuda, then Eastwood Elementary in Thompson Manitoba. She culminated her career at Carpenter High School, Meadow Lake Saskatchewan. During those years she found time to obtain a Bachelor’s of Education from the University of Manitoba (Fall 1972), as well as a Bachelor of Arts from Brandon University, majoring in English with minors in History and Psychology. She qualified as a world traveller, with holidays in England, Ireland, France, Germany, Poland, Soviet Russia and Finland. Her most memorable travels were a six-month overland tour by truck from London to Singapore, then later on a world cruise on board the MS Rotterdam. Ms. Sayeau received many personal and professional accolades throughout her life, with the following being her favourite. Her nephew Blaine told her of his meeting an ex-student of hers. Blaine, knowing his Aunt Mary, said to the man “I’ll bet you anything she was the toughest teacher you ever had.” The man’s reply--”No sh!t, Sherlock!--was of course Ms. Sayeau’s rightful due. There are no memorials planned, nor are donations to any charity requested.
