KALYNA WYNNYTZKA On December 21, 2013, two days before her 95th Birthday, Kalyna Wynnytzka (formerly Hawaleshka) peacefully left this this world. She left to grieve: her son, Ostap Hawaleshka (Tatiana); granddaughter Natalka Hutsulak (Dr. Vladimir), great-grandchildren Maksym and Nina; grandson Dr. Adrian Hawaleshka (Joleen) and great-grandson Luka, and other (Koszarycz) family members in Canada and Australia. Kalyna was born in the small village of Ispas, in Bukovyna, Western Ukraine, to teacher parents. After marrying George Hawaleshka in 1938, her only son was born in Bucharest, Rumania. Fleeing the Soviet Army, under which they faced exile to Siberia or execution, the young family somehow escaped bombings and strafing of their cattle train and, after a brief stint in Wroclaw, Poland, settled in Munich, Bavaria for the entire Second World War, again surviving endless nightly bombing raids. They moved in 1947 to Lyon, France, hoping for a better life, but did not find it there. In 1951, Canada was the first country that accepted them as refugees. The family arrived in Halifax in January 1952 after a harrowing crossing of a wildly stormy Atlantic during which their ship saved a Newfoundland fishing vessel. They settled in Montreal. In 1971, Kalyna moved to Winnipeg, closer to her son's family. Kalyna was an independent, widely read, musically and nature-oriented person, who deeply cared about the difficult times experienced by her beloved homeland Ukraine. Thanks to the staff at Holy Family Nursing Home, the staff at Seven Oaks General Hospital for having cared for Kalyna. Similar thanks to Fr. Alexander Harkavy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Mary the Protectress, and Msgr. Michael Buyachok, her pastor at Sts. Vladimir and Olga Metropolitan Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral, for administering last rites. Very special thanks to Kalyna's great-granddaughter Nina for singing Requiem by Kalyna's hospital bed, and to Kalyna's grandson, Dr. Adrian Hawaleshka, for making her last hours more comfortable and for taking care of all official arrangements. A Panakhyda memorial service will be held 1:30 p.m., Saturday, January 25, 2014 at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main St., Winnipeg, with Msgr. Michael Buyachok officiating. According to her will, Kalyna's ashes will be buried next to her parents' grave in Ispas, Ukraine. Donations in Kalyna's memory may be made to Oseredok Ukrainian Cultural Centre, 184 Alexander Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3B 0L6. May Mama Rest In Peace! Vichna Mami Pamiat'!
