ELENA MARIA LUCIA FALVO On January 15, 2014 after a long, full life of caring for her family and friends, Elena (aka Nina, Mama, Nonna, little Nonna, and Nonina) was called to meet her maker. Greatly missing her presence, but celebrating her life well-lived, are her children Tom Falvo (Pat) of Toronto, Nerina Robson (John) of Winnipeg, and Gilda Swayze (Robert) of Brandon, seven grandchildren Brenda (Brian), Brent (Alice), Karen, Gio (Paula), David (Jayne), Lara, and Leanne, and eight great-grandchildren Brianna, Braeden, Brooklyn, Bridget, Jordan, Kyle, Nico, and Ethan. Elena was predeceased by her parents Tomasino Lucia and Marietta Talarico, her husband Giuseppe (Joe), an infant son Tony, and her only sister Gilda. Born October 24, 1915 and raised in Amato, Southern Italy, Elena moved to Winnipeg as a young woman after a short courtship by Joe who had emigrated earlier to work on the railway. They lived a very active life together in Transcona, following their faith and serving their parish church St. Joseph the Worker through many acts of selfless service. Believing strongly that their children should have the best possible life in their new country, Elena and Joe encouraged all three to pursue post-secondary education and they sacrificed much to support them in achieving this goal. Following Joe's death in 1982, Elena remained in Transcona tending her garden and visiting her many friends and relatives until her failing physical health necessitated a move to Villa Cabrini where she re-established her home on the eighth floor. There she made many friends and particularly valued her "by-the-elevator" eighth floor women's group. Following further physical problems in 2013, Elena moved to the Deer Lodge Centre 2 East, where she received loving care from staff until her death. She will be sadly missed by all those who got to know her in these locations. Elena, throughout her life had no equal in baking and cooking, with a special flare for traditional Italian dishes. Nobody left her table without a full stomach and a smile on their face. She always had special treats along with hugs and kisses for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and the unconditional love she showered on them all was an integral part of who she was. She taught us all how to love! A Funeral Mass will take place at Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, 510 River Ave., on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at 10:30 a.m., presided over by Father Sam. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favourite charity.

  • Tom and Pat, Brenda and Brent,...my heartfelt condolences to all of you. What a long life she had. I have so many good memories when we lived next door in Southdale on Minaki Bay..especially when she came over to babysit Brent and Brenda. She was such a kind and loving lady....I remember the time she washed Brent's blanket and some of the frayed corner fell off..but she repaired it! That was so funny for all of us..likely not Brent! - Posted by: Barb Zayac(Gzebb) (friend of the family) on: Jan 17, 2014

  • I loved her dearly and was blessed to have known her, visit her from a very early age, eat her many gifted goodies and to have spoken to her recently. She will be missed. I celebrate her life & know she is with her other loved ones until we will be all together once again. Love to all of her family. Sincerely, "Kymmy" (as she always called me) - Posted by: Kymberley (Loschiavo) on: Jan 17, 2014
