LAURIE ROBERT JAMES FINCH It is with heartfelt sorrow we announce the passing of Laurie Robert James Finch on January 9, 2014 at St. Boniface Hospital with his family at his side. Laurie is survived by his wife Lucie, daughter Carmyn (Bryan), son Brian, grandson Devon, stepsons Andre (Jessica) and Robbie, stepgrandson Blake and extended family. He leaves behind his sisters Sandi, Bonnie (Don), brother Stacy (Esther) and companion Muffin. Laurie was predeceased by his mom Kay (Earl) and dad Jack (Peggy), grandparents Percy and Ruby Madden and Hal and Alice Finch and nephew Travis Booth. He leaves several aunts, nieces, nephews and friends. Laurie was born on February 10, 1954. He was a spirited child and naturally very curious. He grew up on Ebby Street in Fort Rouge and his adolescent life was in Windsor Park, with summers in Grand Beach. Laurie loved cars and his favourite was his Triumph TR3. Laurie always wanted to know what was under the hood or how things worked. He loved anything that could be fixed, and became a great Mr. Fix-It, plumber and carpenter, who could do it all. Laurie loved music and in his teenage years was quite the drummer and garage band musician. His love of music made him a great dancer who spent many Friday nights on the dance floor. Laurie was generous to a fault and was always there to do anyone a favour. He was our 'Go-To-Guy', and could find or make anything from his garage sale finds. He would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it and was always giving us the things he collected and made. Laurie fought a good battle with Esophageal Cancer and even at the worse times, he was most concerned about his wife Lucy who stayed by his side during the last months. He never gave up, but succumbed to his illness and is now without pain and at peace. We thank all of the nurses on the St. Boniface Palliative Care 8th floor and his home care for their caring and patience during this very difficult time. We would also like to thank their very special friend Helga, who was like family, for her care and support for both Laurie and Lucie. And the compassion shown by Laurie's friend Peter from CancerCare. By request, there will be no funeral. Laurie developed a deep empathy for children battling cancer and requested in lieu of flowers, any donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba.

Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • I did not know Laurie personally, but I have fond memories of working with his son, Brian, down here on Pelee Island, Ontario back in the years of 2003-04. To Brian and his family, with deep felt sorrow, I am terribly sorry for your loss. Thoughts and prayers from my island family to yours. I truly, dearly hope this late message reaches you, and I apologize for the late condolences. May this letter also serve to reconnect myself and Brian, if not today, then someday in our future. With Kind Regards, David Michael Tilden - Posted by: David Tilden (Former coworker of Brian Finch) on: Apr 30, 2020

  • Have known Laurie for the better part of my life; being as his sister is married to my brother Don. Laurie was always a kind, gentle person. His struggle was hard, but thank God not too long. Had a few lengthy conversations when he was ill and he assured me that he had come to terms with everything and was secure in the knowledge that his wife Lucy (whom he loved dearly) was going to be ok. I am sure he is now at peace -- rest easy my friend! Marie, Rob, Jared(Amy) and Stephanie - Posted by: marie andrews (sister of his brother-in-law Don) on: Jan 21, 2014
