Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryLAWRENCE HARRISON February 10, 1930 - February 1, 2014 Our dad, granddad, brother and friend slipped away peacefully on the morning of February 1, 2014. He leaves to mourn his passing, and give thanks for a life well-lived, his children Carl (Lynn Campbell), Graham, Therasa (Terry Hunt) and Cameron, their mother Dorothy and his beloved grandchildren Sara (Colin Montgomery), Erin, Iain and Lisa. He will also be fondly remembered by sisters Sheila and Carol and family in England plus Maureen Harrison, special friends Don and Joyce Anthony and Pat and Jean Farnell. Dad was born in Hull, Yorkshire, England on February 10, 1930 and at the age 14 began a seven-year apprenticeship as a steam fitter and brass finisher. During his British National Service he was a radio operator in the R.A.F. and served during the Berlin Airlift. He met our mother in 1950 and they married in 1953. Carl and Graham were born in Hull. Dad was quite an athlete in his younger days. He particularly enjoyed playing rugby for Hull City and always proudly displayed his trophy for the 1954 Humber St. Andrews team win of the British Oil & Cake Mills Cup. In 1957, seeking a better life for his family in Canada, Dad left Hull on a Thursday and started with the CNR in Winnipeg as a machinist the following Monday. The family eventually settled on St. Vital Road (where Dad remained for over 45 years) and Therasa and Cameron completed the family in the 1960s. Dad volunteered for a number of years at Norberry Community Club even though his own children had little interest in organized sports. He was a handyman and mechanic who could fix or build anything. He served as a school trustee in St. Vital for over 16 years, was a member of the Grand Lodge of Manitoba, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, and enjoyed many years with the Fife and Drum Corps of the Khartoum Temple Shriners. He retired from CNR's Symington Yards in 1989, and spent his retirement years traveling through North America and Europe, enjoying his grandchildren, singing in choirs and volunteering as a driver with CancerCare Manitoba. Our Dad loved us without qualification nor expectation and it was returned in kind. He will be remembered as a gentle man. The family thanks St. Norbert Personal Care Home for making this past year so comfortable and in particular his nurse Diane whose support these past few weeks helped more than she knows. We will miss him terribly. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, February 10, 2014 at Meadowood United Church, 1111 Dakota Street. A private family interment will take place in St. Vital Cemetery at a later date. Family and friends may sign a Book of Condolence at www.glenlawn.ca Glen Lawn Funeral Home 204-982-7550

During my time as a Family Life Consultant trying to bring a liberal Family Life Education Program to St. Vital School Division I was grateful for the support and leadership offered to me and all those involved in this step forward by liberal trustee, especially the thoughtful, quiet support of Lawrence for all those of us who fought against the religious conservatives who opposed it. - Posted by: Norma Drosdowech (Teacher and Colleague) on: Feb 10, 2014
