JAMES ALLAN ISMAN James Isman, 66, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2014 with family by his side. Jim was born in Regina, Saskatchewan on May 26, 1947, second child to the late Bernard and Louise Isman (deceased), and brother to Van Isman and Carol Reiter. Jim graduated from Central High in Regina, Saskatchewan and attended the University of Winnipeg, Faculty of Architecture. He married his wife Barbara in 1981 and together they raised Barbara's son Adam Goertz and their daughter Jessica Isman. Jim was happy when Adam's wife Laura and Jess' partner Alex became part of the family but it was his greatest joy to be "Zaida Jim" to grandchildren Hailey and Aiden. Jim owned Hillside Printing Company in Victoria with his wife Barbara. Previous to coming to Victoria, Jim was involved in several businesses, including Winnipeg-based The Leather Factory of Canada and Windermere Enterprises, a real estate redevelopment company he ran in North Vancouver, and Isman Hide and Leather in Regina, Saskatchewan. While he took great pride in the businesses he built, he was best known a caring man who could be counted on to support a good cause. From serving as a BBYO Counsellor in the 1970s to becoming a North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce Board Member in 2010, and most recently donor to many Victoria charitable organizations through Hillside, Jim felt a great responsibility to give back to the communities in which he lived and worked. Jim was interred in the Jewish Cemetery on Tuesday, February 4 in the presence of friends, family and co-workers. Although he will be mourned deeply, he will always be remembered with a smile for his off-beat sense of humour and with true love for his kind and gentle nature. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Victoria Hospice and Palliative Care Foundation or Canadian Cancer Society. https://2621.thankyou4caring.org/ http://convio.cancer.ca/site/PageServer?pagename=donations_can_home

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I had the pleasure of knowing Jim at the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce where we served on committees together through the Ambassadors Club. His subtle and observational sense of humour, followed by a slight chuckle, always made me smile. We co-chaired a committee together and he always thought of what was best for the project. When I first found work in social services Jim agreed to hire one of my clients at the Leather Factory. The young woman was not right for the job. It was my first time having to remove someone from a position. Seeing my sadness and concern, Jim not only was very kind to the young woman but he also took the time to make sure I was feeling OK too. I will never forget that. My condolences to your family. He was a good man. God bless you all. Tony Zerucha - Posted by: Tony Zerucha (Voluneer partner) on: Feb 06, 2014

  • Just over 2 mos. Jim called to say he was ill. We talked for some time about some of our adventures in Wpg. We became friends when I met him as we were both living in Halter East. A wonderful, warm, loving and caring man. Nancy and I attended his son's wedding in Vancouver and last saw he and Barbara there. He had a tremendous sense of humor and we had become good friends..what a shock to hear he is gone so soon. My thoughts are with his family ..RIP - Posted by: Ruth carol feldman (Friend ) on: Feb 06, 2014
