STEVEN SAMU Steven Zoltan Samu, of Setting Lake, Manitoba, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 31, 2014 surrounded by his wife and family at the age of 79. He was born on June 20, 1934 in Keretye, Hungary. He came to Canada in 1957 and accomplished his Civil Engineering degree at the University of Toronto. In 1968 Steve married Dorothy and together they built and successfully ran Sasagiu Rapids Lodge from 1974 until September of 2013. A unique soul, Steve (Zoli) had a great sense of humour and enjoyed swapping stories with friends. His love of the northern wilderness and hobby as an avid hunter led him to many locations around the world, but none so loved as his home and camps around Setting Lake. He was affectionately known as "Opapi" to his grandchildren and many other children throughout the campground. He will be greatly missed. Steve is survived by his wife Dorothy, daughter Nina (Rob), and grandchildren Meagan and Kiara. A memorial service will be held at a later date in the summer at Setting Lake. Memorial donations may be made in Steve's name to the Canadian Wildlife Federation or the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Arrangements and enquiries can be directed to Boardman Funeral Home Thompson, Manitoba, 204-778-7982

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Dear Dorothy: My deepest sympathy to you and Nina. I hope after this length of time that you still get this message. I sent a Christmas letter like other years only this time it was returned and stamped "address unknown" so I knew something was wrong! I did a Google search and saw Steve's obituary in the Winnipeg newspaper. Again, I am truly sorry. My family and I always enjoyed staying with you. My wife and I are basically "homebodies". My wife's arthritis is terrible - she remains in a wheelchair and we have not traveled anywhere for years. If you get this message, our mailing address is the same and my e-mail address is wrisaksen@gmail.com. Sincerely, Bill and Doris Isaksen - Posted by: Bill Isaksen (friend) on: Jan 10, 2015
