PERRY LAWRENCE It is with great sadness Perry, beloved son of Martha and Vern, passed away at the age of 44, on February 3, 2014. He will be sadly missed by his brother Troy with wife Cheryl, nieces Madisson and Katelynne and nephew Johnathan; along with many aunts, uncles and cousins. In 1985 Perry played hockey in the World Midget Championship, the first Esso Cup, in Montreal, and in 1986 he played in the Macs Super Series in Vancouver Expo '86. He graduated from Oak Park High, and shortly after went to play Junior hockey in Salmon Arm, B.C. After four months he returned back home and played with Portage Terriers till his accident. Perry enjoyed spending as much time as possible in the company of his numerous friends and family. We would like to thank the staff at Deer Lodge Centre, Lodge 5, for the wonderful care they provided our son over the past 22 and a half years. Also a big thanks to Dr. Murray. A service will be held at the Deer Lodge Centre chapel on Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, if you wish, donations could be made to the Deer Lodge Centre Foundation, 2109 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3J 9Z9. • To the Lawrence family: Sorry to hear of Perry's passing. We moved from the area long ago, but remember Perry's smile & "fun" character. We occasionally heard about your family & your devotion to Perry. No one can imagine what you went through; may Perry rest in peace, & may you continue your strength to go on. It is strange, just a month ago Perry entered our thoughts and we wondered who we could contact to find out about him. Our prayers are with you. - Posted by: Ernie & Margaret Choptuik, and Darryl Choptuik & family (Residents in Charleswood until 1988; Darryl went to Oak Park & we knew Perry) on: Feb 25, 2014

  • There are times when even though no one has the perfect words, we just need to hear, "I'm sorry for your sadness" and there are moments when, even though no one knows exactly how you are feeling, it's important to know people are there for you. Take comfort in knowing that Perry had such a loving and supportive family. Our very deepest sympathies. - Posted by: Terry and Phyllis Kilburn (Friends) on: Feb 20, 2014

  • Martha –Vern-Troy. I am so saddened to learn of Perry’s passing. As a long time friend and manager of Perry in his early years in hockey I deeply feel your pain. We have been robbed of a very talented young man. Please know our sons are together now and can look back on their hockey and baseball years together. I will never forget Perry, what a character he was..On the ice and in the dressing room. Rest in peace, Geoff Walker - Posted by: Geoffrey Walker (Friend) on: Feb 19, 2014

  • Martha, Vern and Family, We are so very sorry for your loss. All of Perry's friends are very lucky to have known him and spent time with him through his youth. Perry was so loved by everyone who knew him well, and many who simply enjoyed watching him play hockey. Perry could always make us laugh, no matter the situation! Watching Perry play and move up through the hockey system was simply amazing, he always had that special talent that so many others wished they had. I know I can still picture him clearly on the ice! Our depeest sympathies go out to all of you. May he finally rest in peace. Sincerely, the Coopers - Posted by: Kristin Cooper (friend) on: Feb 12, 2014

  • Our sincerest sympathies Martha, Vern and Troy. I remember the good times with Perry... playing on the beach at Chippewa Park in Thunder Bay, swimming at your home in Winnipeg, taking the bus with Perry to see 'The Empire Strikes Back' at the movie theatre, and a family visit together to the Winnipeg zoo. He is now in a better place, free to be active and have fun again. Sincerely, Wade and Trudy Kaskiw - Posted by: Wade and Trudy Kaskiw (Cousin) on: Feb 10, 2014

  • My sincere condolences - I remember when Perry was admitted and my father was in the hospital struggling to live but he couldn't win the fight. Perry was brought in and he was just down the hall from my dad and we prayed for him and stopped by from time to time as the weeks went on. After our father died, we left the hospital and often wondered what became of your son. My father was such a hockey fan and my brother played with the Selkirk Steelers and the Bisons. We were so sorry to see how badly hurt your son was. His battle was long and hard and well-fought. Prayers for you and your family. - Posted by: Ellen Cook () on: Feb 09, 2014

  • Dear Martha & Vern, Shirley and I were truly saddened to hear of Perry's passing after his long struggle at Deer Lodge and send our sincerest condolences. Our son, Greg, who played so much hockey with Perry and with their teen buddies, Sanjay Guiliani, Jeff Hallock, Kelly Gordon, Blair Graveline, Jason Cooper and Mike Dudick and others. Perry was always in our thoughts as these boys gathered together from time to time, visiting Perry when they could and reminiscing. Greg has always kept in touch with his Winnipeg and Oak Park High School mates and in doing so has kept us informed on Perry. We remember, too, our first meeting with you both as parents at one of their hockey games when we learned you were an old schoolmate of mine whom I knew as Elmer. What a nice surprise that was. We send our fondest regards and memories of watching many hockey games of Perry's in Winnipeg. Sincerely, Shirley and Cleve Cooper - Posted by: Shirley and Cleve Cooper (Friends) on: Feb 09, 2014

  • We have reminisced with you over the years Perry's many ways of making us laugh. He loved to entertain a crowd playing hockey, while attending school and just whenever an opportunity presented itself! One of our favourites was how he described himself after going X-country skiing with his mother. We send you our caring love, Martha, Vern, Troy and his family at this very sad time. Hugs to all!
