(EDITH) MURIEL BAKER (nee GANDY) With sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of Muriel Baker at Fred Douglas Lodge on February 2, 2014. Muriel was born in Winnipeg on December 21, 1910. She attended Laura Secord Elementary School and Kelvin High School and, following graduation, worked as a secretary for various law and insurance offices until her marriage to (William) Philip Baker. Together, she and her husband were members of the Winnipeg Badminton Club, The Winnipeg Tennis Club, The Bourkevale Square Dance Club, and The Sandy Hook Golf Course. Muriel was also a volunteer for the Laura Secord Elementary School library and an avid 5-pin bowler. She and Phil lived in Muriel's family home in the West End of Winnipeg and spent summers at their cottage at Sandy Hook. They enjoyed holiday trips in Canada, the United States, Mexico, Europe, England, Hawaii, the Caribbean and South America. When Phil retired, they divided their time between residences in Winnipeg, Sandy Hook and Hemet, California. Muriel was predeceased by her parents and her beloved husband. She will be missed by her daughter, Kim Sheppard, her son-in-law, Richard Sheppard, her grandchildren, Chelsey and Evan Sheppard, her sister, Jean Didmon of Sidney, B.C. and her sister-in-law, Pam Wilson. Also mourning her loss are numerous nieces and nephews in Winnipeg and B.C., as well as the host of angels who work at Fred Douglas Lodge. These gentle people cared for Muriel as they would a member of their own family and never failed to treat her with dignity and respect. Cremation has taken place. A private family service will take place in the spring. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your favourite charity. "Love is how you stay alive, even after you are gone."
