ROSE DOROSCHUK It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Rose on Tuesday, January 28, 2014, at the age of 90 years, following a long struggle with Alzheimer's. She was predeceased by her husband Colin in 1964 and her son Bob in 2010. Rose will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her children Carol Portree (Jim), Donna Dolphin (Dennis), her grandchildren Tamara (Glen), Teresa (Tracy), Crystal (Kyle), Nick, Jen (Luc) and Laura; as well as great-grandchildren, Lindsay, Grace, Jessica, Brandon, Katherine and Tanner. Rose was born in Rembrandt in 1923, the fourth of ten children. She was predeceased by her parents Nicholas and Katherine Popowich, her brothers Bill, Les, George and her sister Ann, as well as her favourite Aunty Teenie. She leaves to mourn her passing her siblings, Mary, Jean, Julian, Mildred and Adeline, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mom devoted her life to raising her children but was determined to complete grade 12 and did so in 1959, by correspondence. She continued to pursue her studies and obtained her Teacher's Certificate in June, 1960, at the age of 37, her Special Education Certificate from the Department of Education and her Bachelor of Pedagogy from the University of Manitoba in 1973. Mom's first job was in September 1960 when she started teaching at Highland Glen. This included the job of School Bus Driver with the Ashfield School Division in the family station wagon. She then taught at Ashfield School, Margaret Underhill and, finally, at Westview School until her retirement in June 1985. Mom then became the official babysitter, perogy maker and spent lots of time with her children and grandchildren. She also belonged to the Retired Teachers' Lunches & Suppers Club. She spent many hours enjoying time with the friends she met over the years while teaching. Rose enjoyed travelling with her best friend Nettie McLean to such places as Iceland, Hawaii and Las Vegas. Mom moved into East Park Lodge in 1989 where she was the social convener, coffee server and enjoyed nightly games like tile rummy and shuffleboard. Her family would like to thank the caring staff at Park Manor Personal Care Home for the care given to our mother over the last nine years. In keeping with Mom's wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held with interment to follow. Friends and family are invited to attend a Celebration of Life on Sunday, March 9, 2014, 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at The Royal Canadian Legion, Henderson Highway Branch, 3600 De Vries Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Rose's memory to the Alzheimer Society, 10-120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2.

Rose Doroschuk was a close friend of my late wife Nalini and myself. Our long term dear friends Carol & Jim Portree were instrumental to our getting to know Rose. Nalini and I visited Rose (whom we lovingly used to call "Baba") whenever we visited Winnipeg. Baba used to live at the East Park Lodge at that time. We have received many loving gifts from Baba (who knitted them with her own hands). They still occupy the pride of place in my home. So many wonderful memories!! Baba would be missed by many. I lost my dear wife and life-partner Nalini in 2012. But, I know Nalini is with me when I am typing this tribute to Baba. We both know Baba has got over her bad days and permanently in a better place now. It won't be possible for me to be present physically at the "Celebration of Life" on Sunday, March 9, 2014. But both Nalini and I would be with the family in our spirits. May Baba rest in Peace!! - Posted by: Kidoor Bhat (Friend) on: Feb 10, 2014
