VIVIAN JOAN HAMILTON (nee BELCHER) Vivian Joan Hamilton, born August 6, 1946 in Winnipeg at the St. Boniface Hospital, died February 1, 2014 at Juravinski Hospital in Hamilton, Ontario. She was predeceased by her mother Maude and her father William Arthur Belcher. She is survived by her daughter Tiffany (Todd Sawatzky), and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews on the Belcher side in Manitoba and Alberta, and on the Hamilton side in Ontario. Viv's dad was in the Royal Canadian Air Force during and after the Second World War. The family was posted in Baden Baden for several years in the 1950s, and in different bases within Canada thereafter. She met her husband David in Ottawa. They were married in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba in 1968. Her daughter was born in Portage in 1973. Her husband was in the diplomatic corps and they served overseas in Paris, Rome, and Budapest. They returned to Canada in 1988. Viv returned to Winnipeg in 1990 and remained there until 2011, when she moved to Hamilton where she resided until the time of her death. She was a housewife overseas and worked as an embassy liaison for new families while in Hungary. She was a chef in Winnipeg and for many years boarded foreign students from Japan, Mexico and China. She had a passion for the beach and traveling and her greatest love was animals. She was a supporter of the Humane Society and PETA. She reflected fondly on her own travels, scooting around on her motorcycle in Italy, getting her boaters license at the St. James Legion, even though she never had a driver's license, and her career in cooking. As per her wishes there will be no service, just a gathering at a pub or restaurant to celebrate the happy times. As she always wanted to be by the water, her ashes will be interred at the family cottage. The family wishes to extend their thanks to the staff at Juravinski Hospital. Donations can be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3T 0R3.

Condolences & Memories (12 entries)

  • Vivian and I dated as teenagers in Germany. We touched bases, and got together briefly, very much later in Winnipeg. Again, later on a fluke by surfing the Internet, I found out she had died. We are all going to the same place, but, it' still sad. - Posted by: Terry Chenier (Former friend) on: May 28, 2017

  • Very sorry to hear of Vivian's passing (belatedly). I knew her from Baden-Soelingen, Germany. She will be missed as she was so full of life. - Posted by: Janis Barnes (Friend) on: Jun 15, 2014

  • Viv was a dear friend and classmate back in Germany in the late 50's when our parents were stationed at 4 Wing in Baden. Her happy spirit and laughter are still remembered fondly. I am sure there will be more of her friends from those happy days commenting soon with similar remembrances. She was a bright and happy spark in our "gang". To her family, I am sorry for your loss. Rest in peace, Dear Viv. - Posted by: Mike McGillivray (Old Friend) on: Jun 15, 2014

  • Very sad to hear, belatedly, of Vivian's passing. I knew her from her "Air Force Brat" days in Baden- SoĆ«lingen, Germany, better known to we Brats as 4 Wing. She was an ebullient, irrepressable and friendly member of a group of kids growing up as dependents of servicemen and women abroad during the Cold War. She will be missed. R.I.P, Viv. - Posted by: Bruce McNair (friend) on: Jun 15, 2014

  • We met Viv when she moved to Ottawa. She lived next door to us. Tiffany was just a baby, and Viv and my sister became instant friends as my sister also had a baby. No matter what, Viv always seemed upbeat and happy. Rest in peace Viv. Condolences to Tiffany - Posted by: AnnS Fitzgerald (Cornforth) (Friend) on: Mar 01, 2014

Love you as a great friend .. and you will be missed Gene - Posted by: Gene Gullason (Friend) on: Feb 26, 2014

  • I had not seen Vivian in many years. We did talk on the phone. She loved my mother and would always call to see how she was doing. When she was young, I thought she was the most beautiful girl I ever saw. She was beautiful inside and out. I am so sorry to hear about her passing. Another angel in Heaven. - Posted by: Marsha Kortum (cousin ) on: Feb 24, 2014

  • I just learned of Vivian's passing. I am deeply saddened. I was in Hamilton in Sept. so sorry that I didn't call. She loved to ride horses and every summer when she visited us in Emerson she begged to ride one of the old farm horses. She would climb up on the old nag it would begin to trot and Vivian would fall off. She loved horses. RIP love you cousin Vivian - Posted by: James (Couison) on: Feb 24, 2014

  • We met Viv in Hungary in 1984 and have kept in touch ever since. Vivian was very proud of her parents but her face always lit up when she talked about her daughter Tiffany. I will miss our chats as she always made me laugh. Until we meet again Viv. xo - Posted by: Linda and Mike Ducharme (Friends) on: Feb 10, 2014

  • Viv was a great friend, she loved to entertain and was a very good cook. I actually stole her roasted potatoe recipe. I remember taking her to the St. James Legion one year for New Year's Eve, with a large gang of friends, we all had alot of fun. I can still remember the smile on her face. Go in peace my friend many will miss you. "however long the night, the day will break" - Posted by: Bob turner (Friend) on: Feb 08, 2014

  • Vivian was one of the greatest ladies I have ever met. Everyone that knew her would have to say, that she lit up a room always. I met her in 1984, she seen me through 2 pregnancies in Budapest, Hungary and kept close contact with both my children, Chrystal and Luke, and even had the opportunity to meet my grandson Bobby. She was Auntie Vivian to them. Loved you always dear friend, and you will never be forgotten. - Posted by: Dale Fitzgerald (friend) on: Feb 08, 2014
