MELVYN LIONEL KATZ Melvyn (Mel) Katz passed away on January 27, 2014, at the age of 83. He loved his family fiercely and was deeply comforted as they surrounded him during his final days. Mel is survived by Betty, his wife of 60 years and children - Alana (Ted) Wald, Andy, Bonnie (Howard) Laurens and Michelle, as well as grandsons, Jonathan and Jeremy Wald. He leaves his sister-in-law, Sharon (Sookie) Katz, as well as his cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends. He was predeceased by his parents Abraham and Bernice Katz, and his brothers Zen and Howard. Mel was charming, intelligent and a fascinating story teller. He had a privileged memory and was able to remember times, dates, and explicit details. Mel was passionate about his business ventures as he strived to make a good life for his family. The pinnacle for him was ownership of the renowned Bon Vivant Hideaway night club. He was also a stellar salesman and within the real estate field, he managed property and adjudicated rental disputes. Mel was very proud of the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed music, watching football, and attending antique car shows with Andy. Mel had a special love and devotion for his dog, Spike, his constant companion for 14 years, and he was thrilled when he and Spike "sang" duets. Private funeral services were held on January 29, 2014 and officiated by Chazzan Anibal Mass in the Rabbi Louis Berkal Chapel at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue with interment at Shaarey Zedek Cemetery. Pallbearers were Bonnie Laurens, Ted Wald, Jonathan Wald, Jeremy Wald, Joey Katz and Bernice Katz. Honorary pallbearers were Michelle Katz and Andy Katz. Donations in Melvyn's memory may be made to The Winnipeg Humane Society or the charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Betty-Joan and Family. So sorry to hear from my sister of Mel's sudden passing. It was intersting to read of all that Mel was involved in (I remember as a kid hearing about the Bon Vivant Night Club) and his success in Business. I'm sure that he will be greatly missed by you and all of his friends. All the Best and Good Health to all of you...BOB Mc. - Posted by: BOB McNEIL in Vancouver (Second Cousin to Betty-Joan) on: Feb 10, 2014

  • I met both Mel and Betty Katz through my dear friend Michelle of whom has been my friend for over 30 years. Even after the children moved away, some to live in the States, I made a point of making regular visits with homemade perogies in hand to Mel and Betty and they ALWAYS greeted me with open arms, treating me like family, very eager to talk and listen with genuine interest. But I particulary enjoyed my front row seats to the singing duet from Mel and Spike during each visit, free of charge. Laughter that day was medicine to my soul. I will cherish those years spent in his company. He taught me how to live life with gratitude and to never sweat the little things. I will miss him. He raised an amazing family and I feel privledged to have been a part of it to this day. Mr. Katz, rest your soul, you deserve it. Spike will be waiting to join you in song again. Much Love, Janice Ostrowski-Andrews. - Posted by: Janice Ostrowski-Andrews (Friends of the Family) on: Feb 09, 2014
