ALEC VINE With great sadness and much gratitude for a full and happy life, we announce the passing of Alec Vine on February 9, 2014, at the age of 84. Left with treasured memories are his loving wife of 60 years, Rita; his children, Marty and Pam; Cindy and Marc; and his grandchildren Jordan and Amy; Riley, Jesse, and Seth. Alec was predeceased by his mother and father, Runia and Max, and his two brothers, Nathan and Sam. Alec was born Alec Winegratsky, February 5, 1930 and grew up in Winnipeg's North End. He attended St. Johns High School and spent his free time with friends at the YMHA, playing basketball as a member of the Comets. Alec married the love of his life, Rita, in 1953. He began his working life at The Film Exchange and then went on to a successful 37 year career with Apex Realty. After his retirement, he gave back by volunteering at the Health Sciences Centre, where his welcoming kindness was a comfort to many. An avid trivia buff, Alec had a passion for crosswords and was the recipient of many early morning phone calls from friends needing hints to the weekend puzzles. He was a fountain of knowledge, especially about anything sports related. Alec and Rita had a wonderful circle of close friends who are left with great memories of Saturday evenings, out for `a bite', and winter vacations to Hawaii and Mexico. While we are mourning his loss, many of Alec's friends from the Montefiore, who left this earth before him, are rejoicing to have another hand for their gin rummy game. Above all, though, family came first, and he was the best father and Zaida; family dinners, with the Vines and Streiflers all gathered together, were always a standout, especially the Passover Seder; we will all be banging on the table and `hoy veying' in Alec's memory for many years to come. In the words of Sheryl Crow, `It's not having what you want; it's wanting what you've got'. Alec was the epitome of those words. There aren't many people that truly appreciate their life to the fullest, with no negativity, with a complete positive outlook on life. Alec was such a person. He was a true gentleman, gentle in every way; a good person whose wisdom, caring, and calmness could only positively influence those who had the good fortune to know him. They say that the measure of a man is not `how did he die', but `how did he live'. Alec lived a wonderful life and truly enjoyed every minute of it. In that spirit, we will cherish the life he lived and the memories that we made with him, rather than ask why we cannot have more. As a family we are grateful and extend our heartfelt thanks to the staff at the Simkin Centre. There are many special people there who cared for Alec; you know who you are and your devotion to Alec is so appreciated. Funeral services were held at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue on Tuesday, February 11, 2014. Pallbearers were Marc Streifler, Jordan Vine, Riley Streifler, Amy Vine, Jesse Streifler, and Seth Streifler. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Simkin Centre, the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, or a charity of your choice.
