VONNE ZURBA (nee DATZKIW) Vonne Zurba (nee Datzkiw) passed peacefully at home Friday, January 24, 2014. She will be greatly missed by her surviving family including her son Marc, granddaughter Melanie, brother John, brother and sister-in-law Maurice and Aline Zurba, goddaughters Jennifer Zurba and Linda Sawka, the Kushner and Misko families of Winnipeg, as well as the many friends often considered family that she touched. Vonne will be remembered for her style, grace, infectious smile, quick wittedness, and vivacious approach to living. Formally educated in history she was a teacher before switching towards a more creative career path in fashion. She soon established herself as designer and seamstress creating pieces for celebrities such as jazz great Lena Horne and then became a very successful model working with the likes of Bob Hope and being featured by major advertisers such as the Hudson's Bay Company. Her entrepreneurial vision led her to create Winnipeg's premier consignment retail fashion store. Her passions were for the finer things, studying the culinary arts in Marcella Hazan (Bologna), La Varenne (Paris) as well as traveling the world to attend the great opera houses. The Winnipeg arts community will attest to her hosting some memorable late night dinner parties where gourmet dinner, conversation, laughter and music went on well until the early morning hours. In addition to being a dynamic and inspiring personality Vonne was a sincerely loving person who always put others first and believed in "leaving people better than she found them"... She transcended and was comfortable in accommodating all those she encountered on her remarkable journey. As a family, we have been deeply moved by the outpouring of love that people have shared for her memory. She is truly irreplaceable...and a life such as hers was truly great.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • As my mum has attested to, my Nini (grandmother) was a huge part of my upbringing...and my adult life. We got to know each other in so many different ways throughout the stages of life, and I am truly lucky to have had her for just over 32 years of my life. People would often look at our relationship as a sort of kindness, but those who knew us well knew that we were inseparable because of the love, laughter, and commonality that we shared. When someone passes who has had such an impact on our existence the world becomes a different place. I feel compelled to continue her legacy, but also realize that her spirit can never be duplicated. Among many complicated emotions that I am feeling...perhaps the most important ones are those of love and gratitude. She was a kindred spirit and was a tremendous gift in my life and the lives of many others. - Posted by: Melanie Zurba (Granddaughter) on: Feb 12, 2014

  • Melanie had two Mums growing up. Me and you Nini. You were also her teacher, Grandmother, and best friend. Melanie's success today lays on your shoulders. I'll never forget everything you did for me and Melanie. We couldn't have got though without you. Thank you for being there Nini. All my love, forever in my thoughts, Sharon. - Posted by: Sharon Laker (Daughter-in-law) on: Feb 12, 2014

  • Aunt Vonne was my favorite Aunt and like a second mother. I remember being memorized by her glamourous ways as a small child and have kept looking up to her since. Full of energy, always chic, and elegant she was fabulous in every way and more. Such a dear friend and a lifelong mentor. Thank you Aunti for being part of my life, you will always be a big part of mine! "We'll see you when we see you" ... Until then, I miss you and love you always, "Niecey" - Posted by: Roxanne Nikki (Niece) on: Feb 10, 2014
