BETTY ANN HENRY (nee ROBSON) With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our mom and grandma in the early morning hours of February 10, 2014. Betty lost Lyle, her husband and best friend of 62 years, four years ago. She is survived by her children Gail, Robert (Vicky), Ellen, Neil (Melinda) and Don (Kathryn); grandchildren Laurel (Manny), Tristan, Caley, Nick, Jessi, Sarah, Marlie, Marisa, Carina, Dylan and Declan; great-grandchildren Samuel and Andrew; and sister Bobbie. Mom was born in Kipling, Saskatchewan, but raised in and around Guelph, Ontario. Like many other families hers was hit hard by the depression, but she had many fond memories of farm life, pond skating, her first job selling cosmetics at Woolworths, and especially school, which she loved. After graduating at 16 and attending business college, she put her accounting skills to good use as the "head girl" at Manufacturer's Life. She was twenty when the end of the war brought many returning soldiers to the Ontario Veterinary College, including Lyle. Mom always said the best investment of her life was the 10 cents she paid to attend the OVC dance where she reeled in Dad. Lyle's career led the newlyweds to Winnipeg where they started the family that would be Mom's lifelong focus. Although their five children kept them busy, Mom and Dad enjoyed an active social and community life, playing bridge, hosting neighbourhood get-togethers and Christmas caroling parties, and golfing and curling well into their senior years. Mom made lifelong friends wherever she went. Food was Mom's passion, evident in her love of gardening, canning, cooking, baking, and, of course, eating. Pies were her specialty, always the irresistible end to every Sunday night dinner. She especially loved hosting holiday and birthday feasts, a task she never ceded to the next generation. One of her last conversations concerned her plan to celebrate three upcoming family birthdays at the hospital. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff of the Victoria General Hospital for their compassionate care, especially Dr. Jean Prenovault and nurses Debbie, Edith and Frank. We are forever grateful for all that Mom gave us and will miss her deeply. Please join us at a memorial service celebrating her life at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 15, 2014, Trinity United Church, 933 Summerside Avenue. In lieu of flowers, those who desire may make a donation in Mom's name to their favourite charity.

  • I got to know Betty & Lyle and their children about 25 years ago. They were wonderful people who led remarkably balanced and busy lives, but who always had time for others and loved to entertain. Their rural roots were never abandoned as evidenced by the large vegetable garden and raspberry patch in their suburban yard in which they both loved to work, and the pay-off was in the wonderful meals they served that always featured home-grown bounty. Betty was a remarkable, capable woman with a great sense of humour and I will miss her. My deepest condolences to all the Henry family. To a life well lived! - Posted by: Dolores Rintoul (Family friend) on: Feb 14, 2014

  • Many are the memories of Betty's nimble fingers & patient assurances as we met deadlines, made infinite editorial changes, & worked to get the work of many emerging & established writers into a manuscript worthy of sharing with women across Canada. Betty & Lyle were a significant part of the team … along with Joan Turner & Joe Connor & Carol & Neal Rose. We send the Henry family our deep condolences. May your many fond memories (& those of friends & acquaintances) comfort you. Warmly, Carol & Neal Rose - Posted by: Carol & Rabbi Neal Rose (Worked closely with Betty on Spider Women; A Tapestry of Creativity & Healing) on: Feb 13, 2014

  • Aunt Betty will forever be in our hearts! I remember those trips from Nova Scotia to Manitoba in the summers and the times we stopped in any time going through Winnipeg. Aunt Betty & Uncle Lyle would always have my favourite meal.....corned beef n cabbage and her famous apple pie. She never missed calling me at Christmas, an annual chat that was enjoyed by both her and I. The Maritime Henry's send our love and utmost sympathy to all my cousins and their families. • Betty and Lyle enjoyed a wonderful, lifelong friendship with my parents, Bill and Ellen Jones. Throughout my childhood, Aunt Betty (as all the Jones children called her) frequently dropped in for coffee or phoned to catch up on the weeks events. I have fond memories of my last opportunity to speak with her, at Ellen's funeral. It was wonderful to see that she remained bright and engaged and was still the wonderful conversationalist I remembered from long ago. One amazing lady! She will certainly be missed by all that knew her. - Posted by: Kathryn Jones (family friend) on: Feb 13, 2014
