EDWARD BUCHKO On February 12, 2014, Edward passed away at the Health Sciences Centre at the age of 81 years. Edward leaves to mourn his loving wife of 61 years, Joan (Arnold); four children, Grant (Karen), Gayle (Keith), Glenn (Chris) and Garth (Lesley), eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Edward was born on September 3, 1932, and attended Gordon Bell High School where he excelled at football, baseball, hockey, soccer and in later years curling and golf. One of his proudest achievements occurred on July 15, 1951, while playing Junior League baseball for River Heights - he pitched a no hit - no run game. In addition he had a passion for music, playing the violin, organ and saxophone. He was also in the school opera and a member of the North Central Senior Association and Child Care program. He joined the Police Force on October 19, 1953, and retired on June 6, 1987, as a Staff Inspector after 34 years of service. Special thanks from the Buchko family to the staff of H4 and H7 of the Health Sciences Centre for their special care and support during this difficult time. A Gathering will be held on Friday, February 21, at 2:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the charity of your choice. Condolences & Memories (9 entries)

  • I left Winnipeg in April/1956 to live & work in Santa Monica, California. I was sponsored into the U.S. by Shirley Temple (Black) the child star. I shall always treasure the friendship that I had with Ed while we attended Gordon Bell High School. He was one of the finest human beings that I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. I know that he shall dwell in the House Of The Lord forever. Ken Rydberg - Posted by: Kenneth E. Rydberg (High School & long-life friend.) on: Feb 06, 2015

  • A true gentleman. I cannot think of anyone I worked with that knew Ed and did not think highly of him. Always a steady Policeman and deserved his promotions. Deepest sympathies to the family - Posted by: Blake Dunn (Co Worker) on: Feb 16, 2014

  • To Mrs Buchko, Grant, Glen, Garth and Gayle, my deepest sympathies to all of you. I give thanks to God that I was blessed with knowing a true man, Ed Buchko. Your father's smile I will always remember for the genuine warmth you felt and the joy it brought. I owe Ed Buchko my life. Ed gave me the confidence and direction to change the aimless destructive path I was on to graduate from university and apply to be a police officer. My eyesight did not allow me to be accepted. Ed Buchko helped me try. My children never had the opportunity to meet your father, they do know everything he meant to me and the special place Ed Buchko has in my heart. Due to medical tests I cannot be there on Friday, my thoughts and prayers are with you. I thank God for having met your father and for knowing all of you.
