LILY FORSTER CHALMERS March 6, 1918 - February 14, 2014 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our Mum, Nana and Great-Nana Lily on February 14 at the Deer Lodge Centre. Lily was predeceased by her husband James and her son Bruce. She will be lovingly remembered by her children Jane Morrison, Jo-Ann and husband Gary Kowal, Roger and wife Bonnie Chalmers, grandchildren Tammy and husband Scott, Jason, Cory, Erin and her fiancé Ryan, Elan, Jesse and his partner Heather, Jordan, Taylor, Camryn and Abby, great-grandchildren Christian, Amaya, Gracie, Bobby and Geoffrey, and by her dear older sister Doris Mallaburn of Chesterfield, Derby, England, as well as her many nieces and nephews in England and Canada. Lily was born to Henry and Mary Ann (nee Wright) Forster in Waldridge Fell, County Durham, England, the youngest of five sisters and two brothers. At 12, she moved with her family to Claycross, Derbyshire, England. She trained and practiced as a nurse before and during the Second World War in Nottingham, England. She married Flight Lieutenant James Chalmers on January 18, 1945. Their first child Bruce was born in Nottingham in November of 1945. In 1946, she boarded the Queen Mary with many other war brides sadly leaving behind her loving family but full of excitement to see her husband and start their new life in Canada. In 1949, their second child Jane was born. In 1954, their third child Jo-Ann was born. In 1959, their last child Roger was born. In 1951, they made a permanent home in St. James. The home Mum and Dad created on Guildford Street was a sanctuary for everybody. Many happy memories were made with her family around the dinner table every Sunday. Summers were spent together at the cottage built by Dad at Woodchuck Bay, Lake of the Woods. Their door was always open, Dad always said "Home is the place that when you go they always take you in.". Many fond memories were made that each one of us will treasure in our hearts. Always Loved, Loved Always. Dearest Mum, Nana and Great-Nana, how we'll miss you. When we count our blessings we always count you twice. The family wishes to express it's heartfelt thanks to both the staff and the patients of Deer Lodge 2 East for their kind care and concern for mum in the past few months. A celebration of Lily's life will be held on Thursday, February 20, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • One of our happiest memories of Aunt Lily is of her visit to England in the Autumn of 2003. She had visited relatives whilst touring parts of England and Scotland some twenty years before with her husband, Jim. On both occasions Aunt Lily visited Waldridge Fell to see the place she was born and the school she attended; Valerie and her husband, Bob, took them to various places which she remembered from her childhood. In 2003 we all visited the seaside town of South Shields, just sitting watching the waves, as she revelled in the peace of it all. We all treasure such happy memories of our beautiful gentle Auntie - she will be forever in our thoughts and will live on in our hearts. From her loving nieces Audrey and Valerie and their families. xxxx - Posted by: Audrey Milner and Valerie Bankhead (and families) (Lily's loving Nieces) on: Mar 04, 2014

  • We all have very fond memories of Aunt Lily's last visit to England, her great pleasure at viewing again the English countryside and visiting some of the Derbyshire towns and villages whose names she well remembered. We remember. Her delight in sitting in our lounge and gazing at the lush green pastures whilst drinking tea from her favoured china cups. Marie also remembers well walking with Aunt Lily to the train station with Bruce in his pram on the start of her courageous and momentous journey to start her new life in Canada. May she rest in peace with her loved ones. Marie & Patricia xx - Posted by: Pat McLean & husband Colin Marie Holmes & partner Alan (neices) on: Feb 19, 2014

  • Jo-Ann, Gary, Cory, Erin, and Jesse, my thoughts are with you in the loss of Jo-Ann's mum. You are fortunate to have had her for so many years. Wishing you strength as you journey through the grief process. - Posted by: Cathie Morgan Matula (friend) on: Feb 18, 2014

  • My deepest condolences to you all. I have wonderful memories of Mrs Chalmers and her family, especially a childhood friendship with her granddaughter Tammy. One fond memory to share is that she would call us in from outside and serve us Fish N Chips wrapped up in newspaper! Always so pleasant and generous. She will be greatly missed. • Dear Jane, Jo-Ann, Roger and families. I want to start by saying that I am sorry to hear about your Mom, Nana and Great-Nana, Lil. I can say that although I have not seen your Mom in many years, I literally knew her my whole life. I have fond memories of Guildford St. and being the Chalmers neighbour. I also at this time want to say how sorry I am to hear about Bruce, I had no idea that he had died, so sad, but at least Jim, Lil and Bruce can all be together now. As a child, I remember you Mom coming home from downtown in her high heels looking so fancy and having been to The Bay shopping. I remember her being terrified to be at home alone at night, and I remember how good she was to our dog Laddy. I could go on about all the things and times I remember, nice thoughts, but I shall close now. Take care to all of you, and you are in my thoughts and prayers right now. Love, from Sheila from 309. - Posted by: Sheila (Dixon) Thiessen (Next door neighbour from Guildford St.) on: Feb 18, 2014
