Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDANIEL (DAN) ALEXANDER MIECHKOTA Daniel (Dan) Alexander Miechkota passed away suddenly on Sunday, February 16, 2014 surrounded by his loving family. Dan was born in Quibell, Ontario on December 18, 1938. He is survived by his loving wife Velma of 53 years, son Robert (Jacqueline), daughter Michele (Al), grandson Michael, and granddaughter Jill. He will be deeply missed by cherished cousins Gloria (Hank), Linda (George), Barb (Wayne), Dani, Chris, and Rick, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Michael and Anne, and siblings Roy, Marie, and Peter; as well as father-in-law and mother-in-law John and Irene, brothers-in-law Derl (Grace), and Bill, and sisters-in-law Alice (Albert), and Joan. Daniel grew up in Barwick, Ontario where he spent most of his time making lifelong friendships. At the age of 16 he left to work on the CNR. Through a friend at CN, he was introduced to the love of his life, Velma. They married and made their home in St. Vital, where they raised two children. Dan was a very active member in the Glenwood community, where he coached hockey, baseball, football, and was an avid curler at the St. Vital Curling Club. Dan and Velma enjoyed going to many dances, and they built and enjoyed the many friendships they made in the community while playing slo-pitch. Aside from being a loving father, Dan felt blessed to have two beautiful grandchildren. After his retirement in 1995 he was dedicated to spending as much time as possible snowmobiling, skating, quadding, and tobogganing with Michael and Jill. In 2000 Dan and Velma retired to Victoria Beach where they developed many friendships and made fond memories. Dan was a true gentleman and will be missed by everyone that knew him. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, February 20 at 2:00 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at the Pine Falls Hospital and the Concordia Hospital for their care and kindness. Got to know Dan and his wife @1998 as we built a cottage near theirs. Always remember him passing by on his quad (kids in tow)giving us a smile and a wave. Also got together for a couple of block suppers. My wife (Sandy) and I, will sadly miss him. What a sad and sudden loss. Can't believe Uncle Dan will not be around the next time we visit but so thankful for a lifetime of wonderful memories. We were truly Blessed to have Dan as a family member for the past 53 years. He was a great Brother-in-Law, a true friend and an all around awesome guy.
