George Austin Murphy was born in Ireland and moved with his family to Winnipeg in June 1959. Growing up in the West End, he attended Gordon Bell and later made his way to Vancouver to start his paint contracting business. George led a varied life and during his travels overseas he met his wife Christine with whom he shared many years. He had a gentle spirit, a wicked sense of humour and a keen sense of adventure. George was predeceased by his father James, and by his brother and kindred soul, Michael who remained forever close to his heart. He leaves behind to mourn his wife Christine, stepchildren Michael and Teresa, mother Winnie, brothers Ed, Jim (Louise), Brendan, Sean (Lynn), Paul, sisters Anne (Oliver), Margo, Goretti, Sheilagh (Norbert), and many nieces and nephews. A private ceremony was held in Vancouver on February 18, 2014. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Addictions Foundation of Manitoba.

My deepest condolences to all Murphys on the loss of your son and brother whom I knew to be kind, funny and incredibly bright in spite of his troubles when I knew him and spent such wonderful times with you all on Home Street. So sorry to hear you left the planet so soon George. Everything happens for a reason although timing is somewhat confusing to deal with when another exits existence on this planet. I always had fun with you and brother Mike. You were both crazy fun and always were kind to me. Thank you for your friendship. See you later. I am so sorry for the family's loss. I have old Laura Secord class pictures of George if you would like copies.
