Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJUNE ATHENA GARDNER June Athena Gardner (nee Mitrou) of Winnipeg, Manitoba, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, February 21, 2014. Born June 22, 1926 in Brandon, Manitoba, wife of the late Cliff Gardner; daughter of the late Gregory and Christine Mitrou, sister of the late Coula Still (nee Mitrou); the late Florine (Flo) Mitrou, the late William (Bill) Mitrou (Hazel), and the late George Mitrou (Alyce). She is survived by her two sons Greg (Inga) and Ford (Gayle), and her stepgrandchildren Jonathon and Christopher (Micheline) and step great-grandchildren Bentley and Alexis Kirouac. June loved life, laughter, music and a nice bottle of wine. She so much enjoyed being with her many friends and family for any occasion ... be it to enjoy a good meal, tell stories, or play Bridge and was never at a loss for words in any situation. Some of her fondest memories are of her travelling with Cliff to Hawaii and Greece, and spending time with her three favourite nieces (the daughters she never had) Valerie Cameron, Darcee Woods, and Debbie Mitrou-Hall. A private family service will be held at Thomson Funeral Home with a memorial service to be announced at a later date.

She was always Auntie June to me. And while we were not blood relatives - she was always my family. She made such a tremendous impact on my life - always caring, loving, laughing. She could look straight through you with those eyes. She had so much charisma and it was infectious - it's no wonder she was so well loved by so many and none more than the love of her life "Cliffy". A love that is an inspiration; so happy you are back in the arms of your darling now. My mind and heart flood with so many memories. I loved that she was Greek! She gave me such an incredible appreciation for the food, culture and history she was so proud of that I wanted to be Greek too! She never hesitated to help me with anything I asked. I always knew I was loved. I could knock on the Gardner's door anytime or any day and then go right on in because it was always like walking into my own home. I will never forget the smell of her perfume, eating Kouriabiedes at Christmas, Friday night fondues or block parties. I've never known anyone so content to support the dreams of others. She was and is a star in her own right. I love you Auntie June. You will be sorely missed and always in my heart. - Posted by: Christine Haider ((dear friend)) on: Feb 26, 2014
