SUSIE SHANKS (nee McGEE) It is with deepest sadness that we announce the passing of Susie Shanks on February 24, 2014 at the age of 86. Susie was predeceased by her beloved husband Jim, brother Tony McGee and sister Molly Barr. Susie is survived by her loving daughters, Cathy Hultman (Pat), Colleen Neal (Bruce), Corey MacKinnon (John), grand-children, James, Jocelyn, Jackie, Robert (Elvera), Lindsay, Reave and Connor, sister-in-law Mary McGee and many nieces and nephews. Susie was born and educated in Winnipeg and lived a very full and active life. In her early years she enjoyed sports and developed many lifelong friendships. Susie had fond memories of her summers at Belair and Grand Beach. While working for Manitoba Cartage Susie met the love of her life, Jim Shanks, and they soon entered into a marriage that lasted for 54 years. Susie and Jim were well known for being adventurous, fun-loving and inseparable companions. After having three beautiful daughters, Susie continued to work and succeed at a variety of careers, most notably as an Insurance Underwriter. Susie took great joy in the lives of her three daughters, her seven grandchildren and the times they spent together. Shortly after retirement, Jim and Susie moved from their East Kildonan home to their summer cottage at Lakeshore Heights, while spending their winters in Mesa, AZ and Chilliwack, BC. At the age of 80, Susie fulfilled a lifelong dream of travelling to Ireland where she visited family and enjoyed tasting some of the local refreshments. More recently, health concerns slowed Susie in some ways but she continued to thrive by remaining the centre of activity for her family. Susie's greatest gift was her joy for life that she has passed on to her family and all who knew her. She never said no to an adventure, even if it seemed unconventional to those around her. Susie always knew that her family and the many special friendships she made over the years were what mattered most in life. Sadly missed, she lives on in our hearts forever. The family wishes to thank the staff at Deer Lodge Centre 4 West for all their care and kindness in Susie's final months. As per Susie's wishes, cremation has taken place and no service will be held. A private family gathering will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Susie's memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Deer Lodge Centre. "Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal." (a headstone in Ireland)

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • So sorry for you all and especially Jamie, Jacquie and Josie the ones whom I knew best. Pat, Cathy you and your children along with aunt Susie and uncle Jim ALWAYS made me LAUGH down deep into my gut. That is a true and rare gift. Keep passing on the magic and come visit us soon. I imagine Grandad, Bess, Jim, Susie and Grandma Grace and Papa Erling are all having a wild party with lots of food, baseball, the History Channel, musicals, bagpipes and and many many dirty jokes. Now we all have our angels. God Bless. Leanne Arbasetti (Bunnell--I got married December 1st, 2013). - Posted by: Leanne Bunnell Arbasetti (Niece, cousin) on: Mar 10, 2014

  • I didn't even know Susie's full name... I knew her only as G-Ma, or more simply, just G. As a close friend of Susie's granddaughters I had the pleasure of spending time with Susie on several occasions and she never failed to keep a smile on my face and leave me thinking "I hope I'm just like her when I'm that age." Just like her: clever, witty, funny, loving... and most of all, despite the generational gap, always accepting of all of her granddaughters friends. And for that she holds a special place in all of our hearts. I would say "rest in peace" but truthfully I hope she's not... I know that wherever she is, she is the life of the (after)party... surrounded by those she loves and who love her... with an endless supply of Irish refreshments;) I love you G. - Posted by: LCC () on: Mar 10, 2014

  • So sorry to read of your mom's passing. I'm sitting in the airport in Sarasota, Florida and just read her obituary. She was quite a gal. Her & Jim were such a great couple who knew how to make a person feel welcome. The last time I saw your mom was at lakeshore and she gave me a big hug. The end of an era so to speak, people like them knew how to make the most out of life. I will miss her as well as your dad. Terry Armstrong - Posted by: Terry armstrong (Friend ) on: Mar 04, 2014
