REVEREND A. CLIVE BALFOUR Reverend A. Clive Balfour died February 26, 2014 at the age of 87, in Sooke, B.C. Predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Lois, his son-in-law Gerald Todd, and his great-granddaughter Keely Kennedy-Todd. Survived by his children Jan Todd, Gavin (Pat), Iain (Lori), Shelagh, Andrew, and Alison Nye (Ben), his daughter-in-law Debbie, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Clive was born December 15, 1926 in North Battleford, Saskatchewan. He moved to Winnipeg in December 1945 to begin apprenticeship with the C.N. Railway, working there for 10 years, first as a machinist/drafting apprentice, then as a draftsman. Always inspired by a love of learning, he went from drafting to designing to engineering supervisor of a Foundry, finally becoming a teacher at Red River College. For 19 years he taught young people to do the things he loved. The three defining characteristics of Clive's life were his faith, his love of learning, and his love of music. He was involved in a number of bands in his early years in Winnipeg and met Lois in 1948 when both were musicians with the Manitoba Youth Orchestra. After a short courtship, they married on February 5, 1949. After he met Lois, he became a member of All Saints' Anglican Church in Winnipeg. Over the next 38 years, he went from server, to sacristan, to lay reader, to priest. In 1971 he was ordained as a "worker priest", a relatively new concept at the time. He served as honorary assistant at All Saints' and St. Michael and all Angels while continuing his work as a drafting instructor. Clive retired in 1988 and he and Lois moved to Victoria, B.C. They found a new church home at St. Luke's, where he worked as assistant to the Rector for six and a half years. After that, he continued to serve as honorary assistant until shortly before his death. During his retirement, Clive once again became actively involved in music, playing in community bands and singing with the church choir. He took up Tai Chi and for several years taught a modified version to seniors with mobility challenges. Even when unable to be as physically active, Clive continued to learn and explore new interests. Memorial Eucharist will be held on Monday, March 17, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Peter's Anglican Church, 755 Elm Street, Winnipeg. Flowers gratefully declined. Donations in Clive's memory can be made to First Open Heart Society, Sooke Hospice, or the Heart and Stroke Society of Canada.

  • Dear Andrew and Family, Reverend Balfour was an important part of why All Saints represents a cherished part of my life of faith and song. His sermons and his demeanour were full of the sense of occasion and noble purpose that imbued every Matins and Eucharist and Evensong. My sincere condolences. - Posted by: Raymond Sokalski (Friend) on: Mar 17, 2014

  • Gavin, Ian and all members of the Balfour family. I heard of your dad's passing through my nephew Mark McLellan who remains very active in the All Saint's community. I am saddened to hear of Clive's passing. It is yet another reminder of the passing of an incredible generation that gave their all to All Saints' including the rich history of choral music and worship. I have many fond memories as a boy and male chorister, serving on the vestry and generally being associated with the Church for many years. My family and I have over the past 30 years laid down deep roots in Toronto. And yet every time I visit family in Winnipeg, I can't but pass by All Saints and smile at the many, many positive experiences I had in growing up. You dad is very much a part of that rich tapestry. The Toronto Holbrow's have made a donation to the Heart and Stroke Society in memory of your dad and all that he contributed to. With my very best regards and thoughts Colin - Posted by: Colin Holbrow (Former All Saint's chorister, vestry member and someone very positively impacted by Clive) on: Mar 08, 2014
