Condolences & Memories (10 entries)

  • Cathy, sending my sincerest condolences to you and your family on your grams passing. I can understand why you miss her every day. She was so kind and helped so many, even in her ‘80’s, getting groceries mid-winter for those years younger, simply stating, “They have to eat, who else will help them?” We would find out after, that she had taken her trolley many times, mid-winter, in the right-hand lane of busy Balmoral to get and deliver groceries to those in need. She mentioned that the snow was plowed onto the sidewalk, so she had no other choice, and the vehicles went around her without incident, so it was all good by her. She was fiercely independent, still cutting her own hair, paying the bills and kept herself busy helping others. She loved her neighborhood which was right in the downtown core, and also loved living in that historic brick house, as she had for decades. I don’t ever remember her being sick, brushing aside any concerns you had about her climbing the steep stairs to her bedroom. She was not going to sleep on the couch, ever, as she had a perfectly good bed upstairs. Completely fearless, every day was an adventure for her. Her stories from her past made us all laugh so much. I remember when you came with her and your daughter to Calgary on your way to Calif. –she wrote Gino a thank-you card, for allowing you all to stay at his place. She adored Gino, of course, he’s Italian too! She addressed the card to “Gino, City of Calgary” on the envelope –no return address, and it made it to him! Well Cathy, I’m sure she is still with you in spirit and it is a testament to you and your care of her that she was able to live into her 100’s. Keeping busy and social, serving others, and not worrying also proved to be the secret of her longevity –what a life, and her dear husband can now finally be with her- she certainly made him wait! May she rest in peace, but likely is still busy in heaven! Hope you and your kids have been well over the years, Jollean J. - Posted by: J Jansen (friend) on: May 30, 2021

  • Today we had a small gathering and visited with some of Grama's care givers. It was nice to speak of Grama and talk about all the happy memories we have of her and the times we spent with each other. Your heart was full of love for all around you Grama and that is only one of the reasons you were so special. On April 11 it was your wedding day and that was 86 years ago. Peace to all and I'm still missing you Grama. Love forever Cathy - Posted by: cathy keenan (grandaughter) on: Apr 15, 2014

  • Nettie was a great friend of my Father and Mother, Frank and Sally Fileccia. She made my Dad laugh. She sewed together the afghan strips my Mum knitted. I and my family enjoyed seeing her when we visited Winnipeg. She was a truly wonderful, loving woman. I cherish my memories of her. Thank you Cathy and your family for your loving care of her. - Posted by: Gina Learmonth (Friend) on: Mar 12, 2014

  • I have a lot of special memories of Mrs. Mencini giving all spare time to helping others in the community especially with us at Sister MacNamera Elementary School. She helped us with everything from Sewing Book Bags to helping in classrooms of all grades. She was an inspiration to so many I can't even name them all. She will be remembered for her selfless, generous devotion to all. Her giving spirit will for an eternity. Thank You for everything you have taught me. May your spirit soar.
