Born: Dec 31, 1918
Date of Passing: Mar 14, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryVERNA NEWTON December 31, 1918 March 14, 2014 Peacefully, Verna slipped away to her "big, blue sky" where she would be welcomed by family and friends who went before her. Her love, her smile and her gentleness will be remembered by her son Wayne; his children, son Chad and his wife Shawna, his daughter Tara and husband Bryan and great-granddaughter Sophie; her daughter Linda and sister Phyllis. Verna was predeceased by her husband Andy and seven brothers and sisters. Her life began in Oak River, then to Shoal Lake and for 69 years, Dauphin and finally to Winnipeg Beach/Gimli. In between working and raising her family, it would be fair to say curling occupied many of her hours. In 1942, she started the Kilty Kurling Klub, the first Ladies Evening Curling Club in Manitoba. She served on that Executive for 50 years, as well as Secretary-Treasurer for the Dauphin Curling Club for 10 years. She received Life Memberships from her home club and the Manitoba Ladies Curling Association. In 1987, she received the W.E. (Bill) Lumsden Award presented by the Manitoba Curling Association for contributions to curling clubs and communities. She also was a member of the Dauphin Legion Ladies Auxiliary, the Hospital Auxiliary and Secretary for Meals on Wheels. The family sincerely thanks the staff of the Betel Home in Gimli for their most compassionate and wonderful care over the past three years. Donations to a charity of choice would be a wonderful acknowledgement of a woman who, throughout her whole life, believed in supporting communities and helping others. A service of remembrance will be held Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at the Riverside Evergreen Chapel in Dauphin. Interment will be held at the Riverside Cemetery in Dauphin. Sneath-Strilchuk Funeral Services of Dauphin in care of arrangements.
