JANET MACDONALD On Thursday, March 20, 2014, Janet MacDonald passed away peacefully at the Grace Hospital after a very brief illness at the age of 82 years. Janet is survived and remembered by her brother, Fr. J. Winston Rye, S.J.; son Ian; daughter Cathy (Brett MacKinnon); grandsons Chris and Derek (Caitlin Wiens); sister-in-law Marie MacDonald, nieces; nephew; cousins; and friends and neighbours. She was predeceased by her husband Mac (Gerry) in 1986; son Neil in 2010; brother Albert in 1995; and her parents. Mom was born in Winnipeg and lived her entire life in her beloved St. James. She was a caring person along with being a very independent soul. Despite this very cold winter, it did not stop her from getting out and walking in her neighbourhood even though she was unwell. Mom was always up for a family get together; a glass of wine with neighbours; puttering in the garden or just chatting on the phone with family, friends and her cousin Vivian. She was so looking forward to the upcoming wedding of her grandson Derek. She loved her time at the family cottage in Grand Marais. In her younger years, spending the summers there with us and then weekends until the climb up the "hill" became too much. Mom never missed a beat when it came to church and St. Paul's was "her place" as she would refer to it. She will be missed by many of her church friends. Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Paul the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, 2400 Portage Avenue with Janet's brother, Fr. J. Winston Rye, S.J., presiding. A private family Interment will take place in Assumption Roman Catholic Cemetery, 3990 Portage Avenue. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3C 2B7. Wojcik's Winnipeg Funeral Chapel & Crematorium, 2157 Portage Avenue, is in care of arrangements. wojciksfuneralchapel.com 204-897-4665.

I will truly miss my dear kind neighbour and friend. As her other neighbour put it things won't be the same here this summer. May we all find peace in our memories of Janet. (I think I will buy a Gnome for my garden this spring). Hugs to all of Janet's family. - Posted by: Kathy Rivet (Neighbour) on: Mar 26, 2014

So very sorry to hear of Janet's passing. Lots of memories of Janet and our mom chatting over and comparing flowers. Will miss her strolling past the house on Hillbrow especially on Sundays on her way to and from mass. Take comfort in knowing that the sadness you are feeling now will change to sweet memories over time. Our thoughts are with you. - Posted by: Bonnie and Garry Grace (Grand Marais neighbours ) on: Mar 24, 2014

Mrs. Mac will be greatly missed in our neighborhood indeed, being her friend and neighbor was an honor and a privilege. She was an inquisitive and knowledgeable individual who cared deeply for the safety and happiness of the people around her. She made sure in a kind and loving way that everyone, old and young alike were looked out for and looked after if need be. We will be at a loss without her. - Posted by: Jen Unwin (Nieghbour) on: Mar 24, 2014

My Dad was across the room from your Mom during the last few days of her illness. I was able to chat with her and saw that she was a gentle soul who endured her illness with dignity. Your Mom was very much a lady who maintained her strong faith during a very difficult time. My parents and my thoughts and prayers are with you all. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." [Jn 14:27]. - Posted by: Kathi Campbell () on: Mar 24, 2014
