CHRISTOS SAGRIOTIS
Date of Passing: Mar 24, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryCHRISTOS SAGRIOTIS Last of the Hard Men It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our loving husband, father and grandfather, Christos Sagriotis. After a courageous battle with cancer, he left this world peacefully, with family at his side, on March 24, 2014. Christos was born in 1939 in Hania, Crete, Greece. After serving in the Greek Military, he married the love of his life, Ellena, and they started a young family. In 1966, his young family with three children left Europe and boarded the Frangia ship in search of a better life in Canada. After a year in Winnipeg and an addition to the family, they moved to the "Hub of the North". Four more children were born in Thompson and it would be the family home for the next 38 years. He worked tirelessly with Malcolm and Landers Construction before starting his own successful company, Sagriotis Construction. Christos took immense pride in his work and was regarded as being one of the best carpenters in Thompson. Always looking for additional ways to support his family, Christos and Ellena started and owned a variety of ventures including Crete Restaurant and Ellena's Pizza. Outside of work, Christos loved spending rare free time hunting and fishing with close friends in Northern Manitoba. After raising their eight children and so many great memories in Thompson, Christos and Ellena made the decision to move to Winnipeg in 2005. Now in "retirement", Christos bought and completely renovated three homes to ensure a better future for his wife and family. Right up to his last days, he also took great pleasure in completing home projects for his children. Christos spent his last nine years enjoying quality time with his children, grandchildren, and two dogs. He loved cooking Greek meals, making homemade bread and barbecuing for the family. Christos came to this country without a word of English or a penny to his name. His extreme determination and work ethic allowed him to overcome initial obstacles and provide the very best for his family which was most important in his life. Christos had a unique sense of humour and use of sarcasm that remained present through his last days. Christos was heartbroken by the loss of his daughter Nina in 2012. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Ellena; children, Dimitrius, George, Angie, Rita, Sonny, Nick, and Steven as well as numerous grandchildren, relatives and friends. His family will forever miss his strength, humour, and devotion. Prayers will be held at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 2255 Grant Ave. on Thursday, March 27, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. The funeral will take place on Friday, March 28, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the same location. Interment will follow at Waverley Memorial Gardens. You may forward condolences through the church. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
