Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryETHEL HARDER (nee FIDLER) (KNOWLES) It is with heavy hearts that the family announces the passing of Ethel Harder on Thursday, March 27, 2014, at Tache Centre, at the age of 107 years. Born in Woodlands, MB on October 4, 1906, Ethel was the oldest of John Montrose and Miranda (Durocher) Fidler's 13 children. She is survived by her children, Joyce McMillan (Bob) of Kelowna and Lorne Knowles (Jan); grandchildren: Lisa Publow (Jon), Larry Knowles (Elizabeth), Chris Knowles (Shana) of Toronto and Sydney McMillan of Edmonton; great-grandchildren: Miranda, Rob, Evan, Tyra, Hunter, Harper, Hannah, Sadie and Regan; one sister, Jean Davis of McCreary and sister-in-law, Iverna Fidler. She was predeceased by her husbands, George Knowles and Phil Harder, daughter, Trudy Alexander, son-in-law, Bob Alexander, and grandson, Robbie McMillan. When her own mother passed away at a very young age, Ethel took on the responsible role of mother to her younger siblings and was very close to her family. She then became a mother herself, raising her own children with her husband, George. While she spent many years as a homemaker, Ethel also worked at Eaton's where she made many lasting friendships. Ethel had a keen mind with many talents and interests. She was very proficient at knitting, sewing, crocheting, petit point and ceramics. An avid bingo and card player, she also loved dancing and shopping. Later, she and Phil found much enjoyment in travelling. They spent many special times at Trudy and Bob's hobby farm in Anola. Blessed with an excellent memory, Ethel was a most interesting storyteller. In her later years, everyone enjoyed hearing her tell stories of a young Manitoba and the tales of the old days. A petite, feisty spirited woman, always extremely well groomed and fashionably attired, Ethel lived an amazingly long life and was an inspiration to many who knew her. Special thanks to the staff of 3ABC at Tache Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Ethel to a charity of one's choice. Cremation has taken place and a private celebration of Ethel's life will be held at a later date. The Coutu Family in care of arrangements: E.J. COUTU & CO. Condolences to the family, had the pleasure of meeting Ethel about 4 yrs. ago for the 1st time, amazing lady, we talked old times. I wish I could have had more visits with her as her memory was so good. I learned a lot in the short afternoon I had with her, she was in the process of hemming a pair of new slacks and was ticked cause she couldn't thread her needle, an incident I can't forget. May she rest in peace. Sincerely, Lorne. - Posted by: Laurent [Lorne] Gauvin (1 st. cousin Son of Albert & Marie[ nee Desrocher] Gauvin of St Eustache MB . Marie being sister to ) on: Apr 23, 2014

My Auntie Ethel was a special person in my life and a great role model. I will miss her strong spirt and the humorous stories that she told. I was very fortunate to have had such a "spunky" aunt for so long in my family. I was very proud of her and took every opportunity to tell others about her amazing longevity. My heartfelt sympathies to my cousins and auntie's extended family. Thank you for sharing her with me I will miss her dearly. - Posted by: Miranda Fidler (Niece) on: Mar 29, 2014
