BRENDA KALAWARNY (nee MAGNUSSON) March 27, 1954 - March 28, 2014 It is with great sadness and love that we bid farewell to our mother, nana, sister, aunt, daughter and friend, Brenda, on Friday, March 28, at the age of 60, with her family by her side. Brenda will be forever remembered by her children Tammy (Dale), Nancy (Kirk), stepdaughter Lori (Jerrold) and foster son Glen. She will be in the hearts of her grandchildren Liam, Nathaniel, Tiana, Shyla, two foster twin baby girls, Alicia, Nygel, Savannah, Sierra, Jalen, Jayce. Her siblings Debra (Colin), Kelly (Linda), Jackie (Tammy), Shane, Countess (Jim) and step-parents Peter Latendre and Elsie Magnusson, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, and her dear special friend Debbie Paul. Brenda was predeceased by her mother Hazel Latendre, father Harold (Bud) Magnusson, brother James and granddaughter Shyann. In honour of our mother, we ask that we never forget what violence can do to human dignity, compassion, hope and aspiration. Our mother, a warrior, survived domestic violence when it was intended to be her end. She never allowed her hardship to dictate her life, instead she empowered herself to be a fighter and a helper to all she knew. She shared her story, she guided others, she loved whole-heartedly and everyone she knew was treated like family. She was a survivor, a warrior, she fought until the very end. A special thank you to Maples Personal Care Home staff (especially Cathy) for their compassion and care. In keeping with Mom's wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, April 2 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Voyage Funeral Home, 220 Hespeler Avenue, Winnipeg.

  • Brenda was one of the greatest people I knew. She helped me in more ways I could even count. She was the mother I never had and she will be greatly missed. Mom had a heart of gold that could not be measured. She loved to be there to help others in any way she could. She was a fighter in every sense of the word. She is a great inspiration, one of a kind lady. I love you Mom, you will always be in my heart. You will never be forgotten. You were an angel here and now in heaven. Love you always Angie - Posted by: Angie Ferens (mom) on: Apr 02, 2014

  • My heart goes out to the family and friends of Brenda. I will miss her corny jokes and her laughter, but she will always be remembered as a loving, compassionate close dear friend to our family! Since my sister Debbie Paul has always called her Wifee, she would talk to Brenda every night at bedtime. Our family has always had this ritual of "being the Waltons" and we always would say goodnight to Debbie and I always referred to her as "Johnboy". Brenda felt left out. So my Mom and I decided to call her a different southern corny name each night. Each night we would think of a new name to call Brenda, so tonight Mom and I will say "Goodnight Adelyne - we love you and sweet dreams!" - Posted by: Claudette Paul (Friend) on: Apr 01, 2014

  • She was the strongest woman I have ever known. She had the biggest heart and would tell you straight up if you were messing up. She took me in as her own together with my family and didn't treat me any different than her own daughters. This woman was my mother in every sense. I am going to greatly miss her. She has had such an enormous effect in my life. She saved me and gave me the strength and courage that I needed to be the woman and the mother I am today. She tried so hard to reunite me with my biological father but instead our relationship grew even stronger. I love you Mom and I hope you are proud of me. - Posted by: Lori Unger-Spence (stepdaughter) on: Apr 01, 2014
