MARIA COLATRUGLIO May 1, 1932 - March 30, 2014 It is with saddened hearts that we announce the passing of Maria, our dear mom, on March 30, 2014. Maria was predeceased by her husband Giuseppe, father Michele, mother Bambina, and sister Giuseppina. Mom was born May 1, 1932 in the town of San Bartolomeo in Galdo, P. Benevento, Italy. She met Dad at the age of 16 and was married on November 7, 1955. In 1957, Mom and Dad, with their four-month-old daughter, headed for Canada aboard the Giulio Cesare Ocean Liner, in hopes of planting new roots. Mom held various jobs but was primarily a stay-at-home mom. During our childhood, our home was recognized as the local daycare as she always enjoyed babysitting the neighbourhood kids. It was not uncommon to wake up in the morning to find a new baby guest in a playpen in our living room. To the older kids she was affectionately known as Mamma Maria. Our Mom had a unique ability to create a warm and loving environment in our home, for all her family and friends. "Casa Colatruglio" was the hub of many enjoyable family gatherings. Mom had a great sense of humour and laughter could always be heard especially when surrounded by her grandchildren. She was so proud of them. Mom's passion for gardening resulted in a yard filled with a variety of flowers and shrubs that she always called "her little paradise". Mom, we treasure the precious memories you made with us. We will miss you immensely. Maria's family would like to express deep gratitude for the staff on 7A West at St. Boniface Hospital. Our Mom's lengthy stay was made tolerable by their exceptional and compassionate care. Not surprisingly, she made many new friends. Maria is survived by her three children, Tina (John), Mickey (Joe), and Angelo (Franca), grandchildren Dominic, Anthony (girlfriend Nicole), Jonathan, Sonia, and Giuseppe, and her brother, Antonio (Assunta). Also left to mourn her passing are in-laws, nieces, nephews, and many friends in Canada and Italy. Funeral mass will be held at Holy Rosary Church, 510 River Ave. on Thursday, April 3, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. with Fr. Sam Argenziano officiating. Viewing will start at 10:00 a.m. Entombment will be at the Assumption Roman Catholic Cemetery, 3990 Portage Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Maria's memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
