ROBERT WARREN GARTON 1925 - 2014 Robert (Bob) passed away at Peace Arch Hospital, White Rock, BC in the early morning April 5, 2014. Bob is survived by his cherished wife of 64 years Janet (Rose, of Ochre River), his daughter Colleen (Don) Goldie and their daughters Christina Goldie (Kyle Hawkins) and Caelin Folsom (Kyle Folsom) all of BC, his son Tim Garton and grandson David Garton of Winnipeg. He was predeceased by his infant grandson Christopher Goldie and his oldest brother Ralph (Barbara) of Port Coquitlam. He is also survived by his brother Alvin (Norma) of Courteney, BC, special cousins Shirley Hogue and J.B. Garton, nieces, nephews and cousins too numerous to mention. Bob was fondly known as "Guppy" to his beloved grandchildren. Bob was born in Poplar Point, MB June 13, 1925 to parents Herbert and Myrtle (Hannah) Garton. Bob spent his boyhood and attended school in Poplar Point enjoying the life and adventures of a country boy. He was proud of his heritage and was a descendant of pioneers Oliver and Mary Gowler who arrived in the Red River settlement in 1836 with the Hudson's Bay Co. as well as a descendant of John Thomas Garton who arrived in the James Bay settlement of Moose Factory, ON in 1803 and has "Spencer" cousins in Chisasibi, P.Q. Bob served with the RCAF in 1944 and joined the Canadian Army in 1945 and was a qualified parachutist at the end of his service in 1946 belonging to the elite 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion of which he was very proud. He joined the Winnipeg Police Force in 1947 as a foot patrolman (in the dead of winter and got to wear the Buffalo coat) and rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was a man of strong morals, a compassionate intelligent man and did not suffer fools gladly. From all accounts he was a much respected member of the Winnipeg Police Services. With a heavy heart and much discussion with Janet, Bob decided to retire after 32 years in 1979. Not happy with sitting on his laurels, he worked for the Manitoba Natural Resources in the Forest Protection Service based out of Bissett, MB. He was a Helitac officer and spent eight summers jumping in and out of large Bell 204's directing and assisting the ground crews in the fight against forest fires. The ground crews mainly came from the Hollow Water First Nation and he became great friends with many of them. He flew most often with pilot Norm Jones enjoying great and sometimes dangerous adventures. He retired from his part-time summer job after eight years. Bob's most cherished times however, were at the family cottage at Wallace Lake fishing for Pickeral and spending time with Janet, family and their many friends. In 1987 Bob and Janet left Winnipeg and retired to Langley, BC for the winter months returning to Manitoba and their beloved cottage for the summers. In Bob's declining years he was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and battled that monster for the past seven years. Through it all he maintained his sense of humour and was a gentle good man to the end. We, his family, miss him dreadfully and will miss his guidance and love throughout the rest of our lives. May God Bless You and Keep You, safe in the Palm of His Hand. With love, your family No service by request with interment of ashes at Poplar Point this summer hopefully with a bagpipe playing Bob's favourite "Amazing Grace". We ask in lieu of flowers a donation to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada in memory of Robert Garton if you should wish to do so.

  • Bob will be missed by the Kacperski family. My mother always spoke highly of him.I met Bob as a teenager in Bissett working at Nicks Gulf Service and fighting fire. The later years I would met Bob every spring when he would return to his cabin in Wallace and I would see his faded yellow dodge driving in bissett. Bob was a fair and honest man,a true Bissetter. RIP Bob - Posted by: Richard Kacperski (Freind) on: Apr 10, 2016

  • We are terribly sorry to hear of Bob's passing and extend our most sincere and heartfelt condolences to Janet, Tim, David, and all family members. Bob was an extremely kind individual who was always ready to offer ideas, assistance, or share his take on the current situation...something we valued very much. He was an extremely insightful individual with a heart of gold. Bob often made us smile with his sense of humor, and our children especially enjoyed walking over to their cabin to visit "Mr. and Mrs. Garton" and their dog, Joey. Bob and Janet were the best lake neighbors anyone could ask for, and we were very fortunate to have them beside us for so many years. Rest in peace, Mr. Garton. - Posted by: Brenda and Kelly Ward and sons. (Lake friends and neighbors) on: Apr 27, 2014

  • For well over thirty years it has been my pleasure and honour to be considered a friend of Bob Garton. He was kind, considerate, honest, reliable, honourable and always willingly stepped up to the plate when assistance was needed. He always had some great stories to share! He was like a second father or favourite Uncle to me and I truly admired and respected him. We have been longtime neighbours at Wallace Lake and we worked together at the Helitac base in Bissett for many years. I humbly thank the Garton Family for sharing your precious husband, father and grandfather. • Bob's passing really saddened my heart. Bob and I spent many hours flying forest fires together in Manitoba. He was a pleasure to have in my co-pilot seat and I often thought of him over the years and the good times we experienced together. His hospitality at his cottage in Wallace Lake was made for memories. I knew Bob as a man with a moral compass that truly was unwavering. Always a smile and a laugh for everyone never a bad word. RIP Bob. - Posted by: Norm Jones (Friend) on: Apr 14, 2014
