SHIRLEY IRENE MCDOWELL (nee MILNE) On Monday, April 7, 2014 Shirley passed away peacefully at St. Boniface Hospital at the age of 84. Shirley will be missed by her daughter Nancy McDowell-Kok, son-in-law David Kok, and their children Steven and Sarah, of whom she was so very proud. She will also be remembered by her brother-in-law Donald Fehr, nephew Doug Fehr and his wife Shelley Will, nephew Tom Fehr, his wife Michelle, and their children Meghan and Katherine, as well as Nancy's father Jack. Shirley was predeceased by her sister Patricia Fehr, and her nephew Bruce Fehr. Shirley was born to James and Winnifred Milne on July 20, 1929 and was raised in River Heights. In her youth, she enjoyed sports, music and traveling. After graduation she did clerical work, then took on the role of a stay at home mother. She then returned to work in a downtown law firm until retirement. Shirley enjoyed baking, knitting, singing and became an armchair athlete when arthritis slowed her down. She rarely missed her grandchildren's soccer games, recitals and school events. She enjoyed the fellowship of the St. Mary's Road United Church Women. We would like to thank the W.R.H.A. homecare employees, and Dr. Li and staff on 5E at St. Boniface Hospital for their compassionate care during Shirley's last days. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 19 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mary's Road United Church, 613 St. Mary's Rd. Interment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Canadian Cancer Society or the Winnipeg Humane Society.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • We are so sorry to hear of your Mom's passing. We have so many wonderful memories of times we spent with you and your parents. Was always great seeing her at The Oakbank Dinner theater when we would be able to catch up on all the latest happenings. Didn't know about her service and the fact that she had passed until yesterday afternoon while out of town at my brother's. Otherwise would have been at her service. Know that we sympathize over your loss and that we are thinking of you and your family. - Posted by: Linda and Lenard Soltys (Friends) on: Apr 20, 2014

  • Nancy - I so enjoyed the many hours I shared with your Mom. She always kept me up to date on Steven's and Sarah's activities - whether it was dancing or soccer or learning to drive or training to be a life guard. I felt like I was part of the family - when your Mom so proudly showed me the latest family pictures. I will miss her stories. I'm so sorry I didn't listen to that little voice in my head the last couple of weeks that kept nudging me to give her a call to see how she was after such a long cold winter. I was thinking after this busy up-coming weekend I'd call her - always thinking there's always tomorrow when life is calmer. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family as you prepare to pay tribute to your Mother's life, Nancy. - Posted by: Debbie Whyte (friend) on: Apr 12, 2014
