JOHN ROSS SINGLETON, D.V.M. 1921 - 2014 After a brief but devastating illness our husband, dad, grampa and great-grampa passed away with great courage at River Park Gardens in the early morning of April 8, 2014, at the age of 93. Ross was predeceased by his brothers Patrick and Richard, his sister Ruth, and by an amazing number of dear friends and colleagues. His memory will be cherished by his loving wife of 73 years, Beryl, his sons Jon (Barbra) and Mark (Nancy), grandchildren (Jon) Arwen and Bram, (Mark) Kirk, Christopher, and Leah, and many great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their children. Special thanks to Kayla, Kainoa and Callie who brought such joy to their great-grandparents on so many occasions. Ross was the son of a country doctor who served small Saskatchewan towns in the 1930s and 1940s. This is where Ross developed his lifelong love of nature and hunting. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1939 and served as a navigator (Coastal Command) for multiple tours in England and North Africa until 1945. It was on one of his leaves that he married Beryl (nee Daniel) in 1941 just outside of Ottawa. Dad and Mom moved to Guelph where he became a veterinarian after four years at the university. It was during these student days that Jon and Mark were born. Armed with his degree he went to Selkirk (Manitoba) and set up a private large animal practice with a fellow graduate, Keith Robson. After a year or so he decided working for the Federal Government would better provide for his family. He was assigned to a post in Swan River where he served farmers in a huge area extending well into the far north. He became Canada's youngest Regional Veterinarian, overseeing Health of Animals for Manitoba until his retirement after 41 years. Dad then took up a life of hunting, traveling, gardening, and curling. Dad's commitment to exercise, vitamins and healthy eating allowed him to keep active and enabled him to curl with Mark until January of this year. When Mom suffered her first stroke they moved to a Supported Living Complex. Mom's needs eventually led to her new home, River Park Gardens. Dad was able to join her there for the last month of his life. Their care there has been exemplary. We honoured Dad's wish not to have a service. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to River Park Gardens, 735 St. Anne's Road, Winnipeg, MB R2N 0C4. "Green grow the rushes, O" ....Dance on, Dad!

Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • Ross was a crew-mate of my late grandfather Bill Jones in 547 Squadron in 1944/5 flying from St Eval and Leuchars. They were the two navigators in the aircraft piloted by Derek Roberts. I have a crew photograph with him in it that's on my Flickr page here - https://www.flickr.com/photos/142177835@N04/albums/72177720296048173/with/51828841659. If any family want to contact me I have typed memoirs from Derek from their time together. • Ross and my Dad (Norman Nash) were both Navigators during the War, met at Vet school in Guelph and later worked together for the Federal Government in Winnipeg. Both my Mom and Dad had the greatest respect for Ross and his wife and shared many good times over the years. Ross led the touching Poppy Ceremony at my Dad's funeral. He was a true gentleman with a kind heart and man that I looked up to and will not forget. My deepest sympathies to the family. Per Ardua Ad Astra - through adversity to the stars. - Posted by: David Nash (My Dads Boss) on: Apr 15, 2014

  • Dr. Singleton has been a friend to our family a long time. He and Beryl were friends of my parents' Norm and Paula Nash. They all knew each other from the War Time Pilots, the Legion, Burn's, Swifts and all the Veterinary groups and functions. They often celebrated together at parties and even at Riverwood Square. We shall miss him and his suspenders and sweet smile. Sincere sympathy to Beryl and the family. Mom will be sad to hear the news.... • Ross will always be remembered as a dear and caring neighbor. Ross and Barrie always had their love of hunting and the outdoors. Ross was always bringing wild meat over for Barrie to try. Jim even brought deer legs home one time, because Ross told him he could make a table out of them. Claudia was thrilled.
